I don't have a general assessment about the busunesses in Paris since I have never been there' I just asked a question, Pat. I have indeed read many hundreds of posts here at Fodors about restaurants,hotels,taxi's,cafes etc. I do so because I am researching for our upcoming visit to Paris. I didn't say I read lots of posts about restaurants overcharging! I said I read lots of posts about restaurants overcharging,hotels charging for meals the travelers didn't have, etc,etc,etc alot all together, not just about restaurants! Pat. I read all the posts when I visit Fodors not just the ones about comfy shoes or which bus goes to CDG! If anyone here thinks I am making this stuff up or am trying to bash France in any way then I suggest you actually read more of the post writen here.

Keep in mind that unhappy people are more likely to post than happy people.
Very rarely will you find a post saying,
"Our hotel charged us only what we had agreed to pay. The cab drivers charged less than the estimate".
OTOH, there are a number of posts where people have remarked that they were given a better hotel room than they had expected.
Keep in mind,
"The pessimist says - the glass is half empty. The optimist says - the glass is half full. The engineer says - the glass is oversized".

I read TONS of threads about Paris and have seen those types of problems -- oh, maybe in less than 1%. And a few of those are obvious trolls
So for you to have seen "lots" of these sorts of posts - I just don't get it . . . .
Maybe give us a couple of links to these nightmare stories -- or are you maybe exaggerating just a teensy bit?
Not trying to pile on, but I just don't see the types/numbers of posts that would seem to concern you so much

Anyone can focus on the negative. There is no doubt that our poster has chosen to do that. No one is saying that these things haven't happened, but somedayparis, I will still maintain that you have to ignore a great many positive posts and an even greater number that don't rave but never report any of those things you're talking about to find a very limited selection of negative ones. It's sad that you choose to find the negative ones, but if that's what makes you happy, then go for it.
Meanwhile, have you been listening? Your original assessment was VERY wrong. Your false impression has now hopefully been changed. You seem more concerned with trying to prove your point than you are in saying "OH, good, I'm glad to hear it isn't a problem after all". Now let's move on, shall we?

I have never been over-charged for anything in France, nor have I been charged for services I didn't receive.
However, at a condo in Maui, I had reserved with my credit card, but I decided to pay cash on check-out. The credit card was charged the full amount. Of course I eventually received credit, but it took forever and it was a big pain in the ***.

I"m wondering is maybe you shouldn't go there. The truth about Paris is it's MY favorite city, it's beautiful, it's fun, it has fabulous art, wonderful food and some not so wonderful, great shopping, nice people with VERY few exceptions and I've only been there three times, but I can't wait to make it a fourth.

What's more, somedayparis you seem very unhappy that people actually like the place. So rather than be glad, you'd rather suggest that somehow posts about metro passes and handbags are more important than seeking and getting the truth? It seems even more apparent now that you weren't really asking a question here or seeking an answer, (if you were, you would be thanking us for setting you straight). Instead, you were just trying to stir the pot, and it didn't work.

O.K. Paris is a big city and in every big city there are business people of questionable integrity. So, to say that nothing-never-ever dishonest and/or shady happens in Paris is just as bad as to say that everything and everyone in Paris is a crook. Let us be real here.
As far as personal experience goes, I can say that Paris' Hotel d'Angleterre on Rue Jacob pulled a fast one on us last summer by putting us in just about the ugliest room we have ever stayed in anywhere, while displaying some gorgeous photos of rooms on their website. Also, a fellow in a small grocery store in Florence asked for eight (8) Euro for two (2) apples and a peach.
Could something like this happen to a French or an Italian tourist in a US city? Of course, because this is a big world and there is a rotten apple just about everywhere. As long as one understands elementary statistics, one would understand that things happen and be prepared and move on.
