Poohgirl, it means "thick", which one can interpret as "not particularly bright". (The late Diana, Princess of Wales, once described herself "as thick as a plank", though I'm sure many would not have agreed with her self-deprecating remark.)
BTW, on my last trip to Italy, I was alone at a table in a restaurant, and the couple sitting next to me was comprised of an Italian lady and a French man. Most of their conversation was in Italian, but I did hear a little French. I was nicely dressed, and ordered from the menu in Italian. The gentleman at the next table complained in Italian to "the padrone" about my being seated next to them, saying he was under the impression he and his lady friend would be left "mostly alone" in this particular room of the restaurant. The padrone told him the restaurant did not have any private dining rooms, and that I'd had a reservation. When the couple had finished their meal and went to leave, the French man smiled at me and said in English "good evening" to me. I replied in French that I hoped he had a good evening also, and had enjoyed his meal. From the expression on his face, I thought for certain he was going to faint!

Nicely done, Bookchick. Oh, I wish I could understand more of a different language so I'd be able to figure these things out. I always learn enough to get by, but I'm never fluent.
Maybe when I thought people were nice to me they were saying unkind things about me! And no, I'm not loud, demanding, or rude. And I think my worst fashion faux pas is a backpack.
