I must be a real neophyte because I hadn't even realized there are "categories." That alone must make me a tourist, and if so, I embrace it wholeheartedly.

I was travelling along Napoleon's trail, and had lunch in a wonderful little town. I can't remember the name of it, so apparently, that makes me a "tourist", stupid me, I just thought that I have difficulty remembering names. (book and movie titles as well)

I really have to sigh and admit that I'm completely baffled by this. I've always considered myself to be a guest in another country, and I hope I'm a good one, remembering my manners.

LOL. agree. most people don't speak a word of language other than English, don't have a clue where the locals shop or eat ,and they will discover a "soul" of Madrid in a week and another soul , lets say of Rome, the second week? No kidding.

Remember you travel for business and become a business traveler, not business tourist. In that context I would much rather be a tourist.

Tourist=Traveler. They are the same if your not from the area you are visiting you are both, so we need to get over ourselves. Someone can get a feel of a city in a week sitting at cafe's or get it in a night at clubs, meeting young locals who take you under thier wing and show you the real vibe of a city. I'm all about history/art but you can can a feel and find the soul of a city in different ways.

The fact is there are good tourists and good travlers and also bad of each. I just really hate when people who are either travelers or tourists complain about all the tourists/travelers.

A traveller is a person who goes on a trip or a journey. That can be anything from just getting from point A to point B (to visit Mom in Cleveland or to shape up the Omaha branch office, for example), to something more involved including touring some part of the world.

A tourist is a person who is is on a trip or journey for pleasure or education; e.g., going to Italy for two weeks to see the sights and eat Neapolitan pizza. Some tourists get more into cultural and social experiences, some less. Some travel in tour groups, others travel independently.

I am neither a tourist or a traveller, or maybe I'm both? I go on holiday. I see some things, I miss some things. I don't make a list of what I must see, or do, nor do I book things far in advance. My main aim is to get away from the daily humdrum and enjoy a change of scenery and to relax and spend time with my husband. I'm just as happy doing that 10 km down the road as 10,000km away.

Reading this, I was thinking that I feel exactly the same way about the city where I live, which is a major incentive for me to flee it at every opportunity I get LOL ! Then, looking at your 2008 Asia trip report, it dawned on me that we are both talking about the EXACT same place !!!

No, the fact that you had a wonderful experience in a little town in a restaurant who name you can't remember doesn't make you a tourist

A tourist would check off the town and the restaurant from his/her "must-see" list. Or wouldn't have gone there to start with.
