Train if it is Como you are bound for. Train then boat if somewhere on the lake. Have fun. It's a wonderful area and you'll surely love it.

The train involves a change of trains before Milan - take the Malpensa Express to a town beginning with an S i believe - anyway an interchange of rail lines and change to the one that terminates right by the boat dock in Como (this is not the mainline Trenitalia S Giovanni station BTW but the secondary one of the Nord de Milano (sp?) rail network.

Fare is just a few euro

A few years back i took direct buses Como to Malpensa airport but i heard those buses were scrubbed - still i'd check upon arrival as that was by far the best and quickest way - esp for folks with luggage.

Since you are staying in the city of Como, then this train route is best. From Malpensa Aeroporto station, take a train to Saronno, where you will get off and connect to a train headed to Como Nord Lago station. Total trip time is 1 hour to 1 hour 17 minutes, depending on the time of day.

Your hotel is a short walk from Como Nord Lago station.

Check schedules here.

By the way, when you input your itinerary, use Malpensa Aeroporto and Como Nord Lago and it will automatically show the connection at Saronno.

Why not rent a car. We traveled from Milan across the entire northern part of Italy. Have done this many times all over Italy. Easy driving. Lake Como is 1 hr. from Milan. It is tricky driving into Bellagio and other places because of the narrow roads. Just take public transportation as many tourists do. I suggest visting Villa Carlotta. There is a boat ferry that stops right in front.

We did the train route last summer that ellenem is talking about. It was definitely the easiest. We thought about renting a car and driving but, decided we really didn't need the car since we were planning on just staying around Lake Como and not trying to visit the other lakes. We used the boats to get around to all the different towns on the lake. After Lake Como we headed down to the Adriatic coast where my sister lives. We took a train from Como for that as well.

For Como city Ellen has it right. We much prefer staying in the mid-lake region.
