What's so great about Paris?

There seems to be so many of you out there who love Paris, and since I've never been (but going in September!), I wanted to know why. More specificly, what are your favorite hidden spots in Paris? We all know about the Louvre and the Eiffel Tower, but what about out-of-the way sites--the places that most tourists miss?
I've been there 3 times now and still ask that question. The amazing hidden spots must require sonar and geiger counters for detection. The Seine cruise, where I was able to momentarily escape the chain-saw din of Paris' streets, was the most enjoyable (least objectionable?) part of my stay.

I don't see the great attraction to Paris either. I was just there and found most of the people to be rather rude. I was with another woman and her husband and we nearly got mugged---twice! In broad daylight! I'll take London anyday over Paris. I feel safe and the people are friendly. I've been to London four times for extended periods and have never had a problem.

Thanks Caitlin!
I had remember this post, but loved reading it again. I was hoping to start a new thread with a twist on this topic! But the original post is great and makes me all the more excited for September!
Paris is magic, and the best places are the ones you discover on your own - back streets, away from the usual spots. Randomly pick a metro stop and then just get out and explore. Go to a tabac/brasserie rather than a name restaurant. Watch what the locals are ordering and order the same. Try a wine you've never heard of before. Go to a street marche in an unknown neighborhood and buy several selections of cheese and olives. Go to the Parc Monceau, the Buttes Chaumont and stroll with the weekend regulars. Visit the cemeteries and look at the incredible monuments to families (famous and not).

Paris is just the best - and for different reasons for different people - but still . . . THE BEST!!
