ekscrunchy,
I just checked my Palma hotel notes, and it wasn't the location of the Hotel Gloria de Sant Jaume that I didn't like. So forget that! It might be just right for you because it does have that indoor wellness pool and only 14 rooms in this 16th century reconverted mansion.

Our car rental from the small agency (Croauto) in Port de Sóller, at the last minute due to the Budget office closure in Palma, cost a small fortune. You can go to Port de Sóller as we did via the delightful tram ride and hire a driver to take you to Deià or Sa Calobra. The weekly outdoor market in Sóller is on Saturday, from 9 am to 2 pm and it fills most of the square. Lunch in the interior courtyard of Luna 36 on Calle Luna (highly recommended) is a must. Great gelato at Sa Fàbrica de Gelats and yummy ensaimadas at Horno Santo Cristo. I'll just say again that the atmosphere and architecture of Sóller reminded me a bit of Uzès in the Gard, which we found wonderful (have been twice).

Wonderful, Maribel. I did read on another thread about a rental agency I think the name is Roig, and you seemed positive about that company.
But I would love to do without a car, so I think I will rely on taxis and the Palma-Soller train.

I will keep that name in mind. I have been renting from SIXT for the past few years in both Spain and in Italy and have been so very happy with them in every respect; I have not looked if they have an outlet in Palma but I think in this case, a local agency would give me far better pricing IF they have automatics. But I think now that, unless there are any rural restaurants that you really recommend, I might be able to get away with not having a car.
Maribel, do you have any idea of which hotel is closer to Soller town--Ca's Curial or Ca Sant? I looked at Google maps but it's hard for me to determine.

Yes, Sixt does have a location at the Palma airport.
According to Google maps, the walk from the Ca's Curial to the main square, where the Església (Iglesia) de San Bartolomeu sits, takes only 11 minutes.
The walk from Ca´s Sant to the same square takes 15 minutes, according to Google maps. I use it all the time to judge walking distances.
if you want to know how many minutes walking it takes from any finca or hotel in the Sóller environs, simply put the name of the lodging as your point of departure, then the Església de San Bartolomeu, which sits on the main square (where the Saturday outdoor market is held), as your destination. The Salvia was a 5-minute walk from this square, the center of the town.
Just to clarify,we did not travel from Palma to Sóller on that historic train. We had to take a taxi because the Budget office in the city center closed before our flight was seriously delayed. The "train" that we took several times was actually the historic wooden open air tram that runs between Sóller and the port, Porto de Sóller, The ride on the historic train from Palma to Sóller is said to be very scenic but we didn't take it. These are two different trains/trams.
