What to try in Greece?
My Fiancee and I are traveling to Greece for our honeymoon this summer, and are excited to imerse ourselves in the culture as much as possible. Does anyone have a favorite local dish for us to try? How about any to stay away from? What was your best/worst experience there? Thanks!

Try everything. I hate Dakos and Horta (look them up!) but you should try everything. You may love them.
The puddings are honey based. the less honey, the better the pudding.
It's a wonderful country; and off the beaten track at least, people could not be nicer.

Joy: The best yogurt I've ever had was in Greece! Also, we liked the tsziki (sp) Its an appetizer made with yogurt, garlic, cucumbers, S&P and you dip bread into it. (Kind of like the sauce you get with Gyros, but thicker) All our meals were very good though.

The yogurt is really wonderful and their honey is thicker then most honey you get in the US every morning I had yogurt liberally drizzled with this super thick honey.. yum. Also got into spinach and cheese pies which you can get anywhere, they make a great snack I also had a dish that my host called simply "giant Beans" now that sounds kind of nasty, but I coudn't eat enough of these things.

I remember a wonderful breakfast on the road at a tiny village in the Peloponnese of fresh yoghurt and honey. Yum! Also the Greek coffee, baklava, enormous fresh strawberries from Kavala, fresh pistachios from a street vendor at Antirion, souvlaki in Iraklion and a wonderful meal of fresh swordfish at a waterfront restaurant at Symi.

I love Greek food. Do you have some good Greek restaurants where you live? We happen to live close to the Greek neighbourhood in Toronto, so we're lucky.
We were also in Greece in September and we always had good meals. As everyone has said, the yogurt is wonderful. Yogurt and honey at breakfast is a staple. (The rest of the breakfast was usually hard boiled eggs, bread and jam, cheese, sometimes cereal, sometimes cookies, etc.) The produce was also amazing - wonderful tomatoes, etc. The capers on Naxos were great! Lamb is really common and good - cooked in several different ways. Also wine sausages were on several menus. Of course, salads are very common, usually Greek salads with wonderful feta.
One thing we both like is frappe. It's like an iced coffee made with Nescafe and milk. (For some reason, Nescafe is really common in Greece.) We drank lots of frappes.
I found that Greek restaurants were much more varied than they were years ago. Crepes were really popular - both sweet and savoury. Pizza and pasta as well. So if you find you don't like Greek food (and I really can't imagine that!), you'll still find lots to eat there.

Have you seen Matt Barrett's website,greecetravel.com? It has a lot of really interesting info on it. Here's the link to his page on Greek food:
http://www.athensguide.com/food.html
It has names and descriptions.
No, I'm not selling his website or whatever. I just like it and used it a lot when planning my last trip to Greece.
