What to do/see in Munich

We will travel to Venice, Vienna, Munich (with side trips to Switzerland/Liechtenstein) and London. We plan to have 3-4 days in Munich. Please advise your thoughts on what to do/see in Munich.

Thanks,

Michael

If you tell us what types of things you enjoy, people might be able to give you some specific suggestions. For threads containing info re what others have enjoyed, type "munich" in the text box at the top of this page

The art museums are ok, particular Der Alte Pinokothek.
Der Residenz is well restored after the Allies bombed the heck out of it, and some of Das Deutsches Museum is interesting, but some of it is not.

The Englische Garten is pretty and extensive.

If you travel to Nymphenburg, beware of the directions in Frommers; they are not accurate.

There are some other features in Munich as well.

I loved Munich; could live there. These are some things I did in 3 days: Victualien Markt (Victuals Market)in the morning, very colorful, stopped for cappuccino. On to State Museum, the Treasury, and the Theater. Then to Augustinerbrau for wine and dinner. Took a city tour, which included the 1972 Olympic site. Then walked two miles thru the Englisher Gardens. Very beautiful park with beer garden in the middle. Went to Hofbrauhaus for dinner and the requisite beer. Marienplatz, the main square with the Glockenspiel (think it works around 11:30 but check times). For a day out you could visit Nymphenburg palace and Dachau which is amazing and very moving (had a car so don't know anything about transportation).

We spent five days in Munich last August - saw the churches in the old town, climb the towers; spend a day at the olympic park - the pool is open, the stadium might be (last summer it hosted the european track and field championships and was closed to visitors), BMW museum (yawner), day trip to Kehlstein Haus (Hitler's eagle nest), half day trip to Dachau (highly highly recommend), city tour which included nymphenbourg schloss, market - described above (we hit a gartengruppe parade - garden clubs) and it was incredible. hofbrau haus for a dinner, see the glockenspiel in the marienplatz, so much to do, never enough time! transportation is fabulous - ask the hotel concierge where the nearest station is and get a map - its fast, clean, cheap and always on time.

The "serch" police strike again. Lesli do you realize how much crap you get if you simply type "Munich" in the search box?

My 2 favorite things to do in Munich is to shop in the department stores and shops around the Ratshaus and go to all the great beer halls and restaurants.

Besides for that I really liked the Nymphenburg Palace which you can get to via public transporation.

I have a guess that once you return you will say that you really loved Munich. Its a beautiful, friendly and spotlessly clean city.

Here is the link to my unfinished websight for Munich. The only section I have done is the one called EAT where you can find restaurant info. http://homepage.mac.com/richardab/Fl..._Arrivals.html

Also look for my recent Vienna Posting called "Vienna Trip Report" for info on my trip to Vienna 2 weeks ago. Just click on my name in this thread and you will get a list of my postings.

There's a lot of side trips you could take from Munich - Neuschwanstein castle, the Monastery at Etta, Oberammergau, Garmisch P., Berchtsgarden, Chimsee, (this is really taxing my german spelling, please forgive any errors). Dachau is a must see. I loved Munich and can't wait to go back. Enjoy a "liquid bread" for me.

I loved Munich. I always recommend Mikes Bike Tours (www.mikesbiketours.com). Not only will you get a fun overview of the city, but you'll learn something about biking in a city made for biking. My favorite beer garden was Augistiner Keller (near the train station). I'm an engineering guy and I loved the Deutsches Museum.

There's a really wild exhibit here all summer called Koerperwelten.

This doctor has 'plasticized' bodies and they're on display. It's funky and not as gross as it sounds but a little creepy. It's in an arena in the Olympic park. Explanations are all auf deutsch but they have headphone guides in english.

Yes, I'm aware that a search simply by city name will pull up a LOT of stuff to sort through. However, this post doesn't give us much to go on, so it's impossible to be more specific. Sometimes it takes a little effort to find the great info on here, and I don't consider it inappropriate to think that the person taking the trip should be the one to take the time and trouble to find it.

I did post links to the Destinations sections both here and on the Frommer's site, which are useful starting points for this sort of general question.

Thanks, though, for your helpful remarks.

I'm with Lesli 100% on this.

Not trying to be facetious, Mthomp77, but if you don't already have some idea of what to do in Munich, why are you going?

To Curious,

Sometimes it is just fun to hit a city on a whim. I did this last time I went to Munich. I was in Florence for a week and needed to transfer for my return flight home in Munich. I thought, "what the heck", it seemed interesting enough. At the end of the trip I actually ended up liking Munich much more than Florence. I also just completed a trip to Vienna for which I did very little research on before i left. Once you've been to all the big capitals it is fun to hit these little cities for a few days.

I'll be in Munich, for the first time, for a day and an overnight in October. It is not my personal choice that I have to be there, but rather because of some business I have to do in the morning.
I just want to acknowledge those information in this thread and for giving me some ideas on how to spend the rest of my limited time in Munich.

I think it's fine to "hit a city on a whim" if you're able to do that. You apparently manage to find your way there, get around, and amuse yourself without asking for help here, so more power to you!

I think people who are requesting information from others bear *some* responsibility to seek it out themselves first. And/or, in the words of Jerry Maguire, "help me help you" by being as specific as possible in their request.

Contrary to what you seem to think, I believe that asking a poster to try a text search, re-post with a clearer title, and so forth, is in fact very helpful. They not only benefit from potentially more useful responses, but perhaps learn how to better use this (and other) message boards, and find some of the wealth of information that is available to them on the internet. I will now step off my soapbox....

I gotta agree with Lesli. Although it may seem stifling to narrow your question to something a little more specific, it helps posters answer the question to the inquirer's needs.

Given 3 days in Munich, I would definitely do the Neuschwanstein Castle excursion. also, I did a walking tour but later met a gal who did Mike's Bikes and I wish I had done that instead! not that the walking tour was bad; Mike's Bikes seemed better.

I apologize for being so vague. I have traveled extensively. (most all continents, especially Asia) My wife wants to go to Germany, Italy and Switzerland/Liechtenstein. I've been to Berlin and thought that Munich would be a good choice since Switzerland/Liechenstein are fairly close. We enjoy hiking, most all sightseeing, plays/opera, drinking beer, etc.

I simply posted to find out what others have enjoyed about Munich. We most likely will do an overnight to Switzerland as I said.

Thanks,

Michael

richardab,

Since when did you become the overlord of this forum? Your last post was completely uncalled for.
