Hi, Al!
Okay, I'll bite...when are you going to be there? What are your interests?
How long will you be in Vienna?

We are leaving for Vienna shortly, and I can probably help you if I know what you are looking for. I did try running a couple of searches today without a lot of success.

Please advise.

Actually, I'm doing a school project where we have to "pretend travel" to a few countries in Europe. I'm working with a partner, and we decided to go to Vienna, Italy, France, and Switzerland. I'm basically trying to see what's fun to do, and decided to start with Vienna. Thanks for all your help, and hope you have a fun "real" trip!

Did all of the teachers get together this year and decide this would be the school project for the year? I just helped my niece out with her project as well. Anyway, here is some information from Vienna:

Go to the Hapsburg Palace in town and then to their "summer home" - huge palace outside of town (take the bus/train to get there). Gorgeous!

Go to the Kiertschadt (sorry, I'd have to check the spelling on this one) Fine Arts Museum - GORGEOUS and large works of art there.

Have hot chocolate and apple streudel for a snack.

The architecture in Vienna is really quite interesting - they really mixed the old and the new very well.

The Votive church is lovely.

Please let me know if you need/want more information. Good luck with your project!

If this is a school assignment, and I were your teacher (as I was for nearly 30 years), I would have insisted that you learn something about the history of Vienna. It has been, you should understand, a major capital city longer than the United States has been a nation.
For example, who were Franz Joseph, Maria Theresia, and Karl Renner?
Any famous musicians live in Vienna?
Scientists? Any other famous or infamous residents?

The name of the art gallery has got me though. I cannot find the name of one that is even close! The Kunsthistorische Museum is the location of many major paintings, including some by Rembrandt, Ruebens, and Titan.
I'm sorry, but if this is a school project, are you doing any research? Your plea for "a hotel, restaurants, anything" sounds like you aren't. Even by an extremely simple search of this forum or through search engines, you can find reams of information on Vienna. In less than an hour, you'll find more than enough information to start your report. Also, check out guidebooks from the library or thumb through them at a bookstore.

Sorry, but my mom's a teacher and the best way to learn something is not to have people on this board find all of your answers.

I'm sorry to lecture, but it is a point I feel very strongly about ... which is why I didn't cop out with a fake email address. To get you started, here are a few sites I used to plan my vacation:

http://www.anto.com/
http://wtv.magwien.gv.at/
http://www.hotel-infos.com/lugnercity/eindex.htm
http://www.austria-tourism.at/index.html.en

Good luck with the assignment! I think it sounds very interesting and would love to hear an update when you finish ... please post your final plans if you have time.

Hi Al, try any of these places, my mom took me when I was a small child and I still remember them, they were all quite grand!
Stefanskirche - amazing church
Schloss Schonbrunn - royal palace
Riesenrad - Extremely large farris wheel
Have a great time collecting info. These are the kind of projects that spark kids interests and get them pumped to travel and explore the world!

Sorry to make it seem like I wasn't doing my homework and research. I already know where I'm staying, what resaurants to go to and some museums to visit. I just wanted to hear people's feedback on what was amazing to see/ what wasn't that amazing. I'm trying to complete this project before I take a trip with my family to Mexico, and decided to jump right into it after my teacher assigned it. I didn't want anyone to do my homework for me. Not to brag, but I'm a great student with a 4.0 GPA, and I wouldn't dream of having people do my homework for me (although it would be like heaven). Sorry again to make my "plea" to sound like I was desperate.

ldsant- A lot of 8th grade teachers are assingning this project this year because it is a grad. standard. I wouldn't be suprised if other districts are assinging it too!

Thanks for everyone's advice, and if I have some time before I leave for Mexico, I'll post what I'm planning on doing in Vienna.

Al:

Congratulations on being such a great student. I think this sounds like a wonderful and creative project. I personally applaud your ingenuity in using the net to gather information/answers/others opinions. Good for you. Please post and let us know how you did on your project!
