An anti-orthodox view of combat and heroism from WWII London is The Americanization of Emily. James Garner's speech in Emily's garden is the most eloquent indictment of war ever to be uttered on the screen.

The PBS miniseries "Island at War" may be too graphic for them but I thought it was excellent.

Another vote for The Maggie, a favourite in my family at the time. It's based on a series of stories about the captain, called Para Handy. There was a TV series based on these starring Gregor Fisher much more recently.

Not at all about WWII, but Stormbreaker has some good London scenes, including one scene in the Science Museum (where there's a great Spying exhibition at the moment). 11 and 13-year olds will love that movie!

Braveheart is a load of cobblers.
Try to get hold of a simple history book about that period.

You might find this site amusing http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/films/
They begin just after the War, but I can remember some of them being shown in cinemas when I were a lad.

Thanks to all for your thoughtful and helpful responses! I now have a great list of summer reads and views and would never had known all of the titles without you. Many thanks!

Seconding BTilke's recommendation for "In Which We Serve", one of the great Brit films of the day.

Also look at "Goodbye, Mr. Chips", especially the original starring Robert Donat. Pre-WWII but very effective. And "The Corn is Green", set in a mining town in Wales.

A recent choice for adults is "Mrs. Henderson Presents" - and you may find it OK for kids if the nudity (rather innocent but a good deal of it) doesn't bother you or the kids.

By the way, maybe the classic Beatles film "HELP!" would be a fun one. Also not connected to war or history, Mary Poppins, My Fair Lady, Oliver!

WWI and II both feature in the drama THE WHITE CLIFFS OF DOVER with Irene Dunne. (Has a children's perspective, also.)

I can recommend Enigma starring Dougray Scott and Kate Winslett. Although it wasn't a huge commercial success it's a very good dramatisation of Robert Harris's novel about the Bletchley Park code-breakers during WW2. Very atmospheric with lots of 1940's period details.

Too many good flicks already, but here's an oddity with scenes set in London:

101 Dalmatians (1996, Glenn Close) ?

Local Hero has been mentioned - it's my all time favourite movie - the director is Bill Forsyth (whatever happened to him??) and he made several flicks that take place in Glasgow.

"Local Hero" is a big favourite of mine as well. More recently I have really enjoyed "Millions" and "Dear Frankie".
