Flanner It's a shame but innevitable, with the onslaught of MTV and all the associated cr*p 24 hours a day it didn't stand a chance.

I have great memories of TOTP. I grew up with it and it played a large part of my teenage life. I remember when a single got to No1 by selling hundreds of thousands of copies and not as today by the number of times a day it gets played on commercial radio.

Fantastic times and I feel an era that my kids are missing out on and will never be able to re-create, it is sadly their loss.

The Beatles, the Kinks, the Animals, the Moody Blues, the MerseyBeat, and the rest of the British Invasion of music in the early sixties.

Monty Python, Benny Hill, and Little Britain.

The famous "british Reserve" as in keep a stiff upper lip.

Queen Victoria (sorry, can't shake the image and we are still living down the stuffiness of this era and prudishness of the Roundheads)

Discussions of the Weather and Shipping Forecast reminded me of a wonderful piece from the 1960's by a group calling themselves the Master Singers, in which the forecast is delivered in four-part Anglican chant.

You can hear it on the following MP3 link:

flanneruk,
Yep I am over 40, so I fit the mourners profile. I was so happy to see the last episode on VH1 Classics, I hated when it was yanlked from bbc America. It will be on again tonight at 9:00PM

"What makes you think of England?"

In another era for ladies, supposedly while lying back.....

(I have never been able to find an authenticated source for this supposed piece of matrimonial advice, by the way.)

"But it was never a patch on Ready Steady Go"

"Grandfather"?! I'm not that old, and I can remember when Aunty Mu was a mere sidekick to Ollie Beak and Fred Barker. Ready Steady Go was merely yesterday.

Oh, I love it when old posts are resurected.

I see from a previous post I was trying to watch the 'Peep Show' and failing - I did get a handle on it (the one I watched was where he had a crush on his boss) and couldn't reall get the humour.

Since then I have enjoyed:

Dr Who
Footballers Wives
Mile High and best of all
Life on Mars

i think I only watch most of them for the English accents but I do enjoy LOM - if only I could stop the tune going through my head

LOL @Patrick.
You got me beat there, never heard of them...
But then in the mid 70's when I was a teenager I spent my whole days and evenings playing football or cricket and when I wasn't doing that I was swimming. TV is a poor substitute for fun don't you think.
But I did make an exception for TOTP.

Origins of "lie back....."....

Lady Alice Hillingdon. Wife of 2nd Baron Hillingdon. 1912.
She said:-I am happy now that George calls on my bedchamber less frequently than of old. As it is, I now endure but two calls a week, and when I hear his steps outside my door I lie down on my bed, close my eyes, open my legs and think of England.

And anyone who thinks cricket is dull obviously wasn't watching the test match yesterday!

He's only teasing. Maybe this is one for the "British phrases" thread, but, as they say "Leave it, leave it! He's not worth it!"

Fags and rubbers.

When I think of their British meaning, I can say these words without blushing.
