I'm 100% aware that Kylie is Australian. However, all of her 20 top ten hits were in the UK, and its the first place I heard her. Therefore, she reminds me of England.

This is WOT, but I went to a gathering in Jersey last year, and the icebreaker-game consisted of pinning the name of a famous someone on each attendee's back, and having that person ask others questions in an effort to identify him/herself.

I was labeled "Kylie Minogue."

It took me about a half-hour to determine that I was the only one in the room who had never heard of her.

Ani, Sorry, I was not having a go at you - Kylie is a lovely and talented young woman and we are all very proud of her and proud that she is an Aussie.

Ani, What reminds me on England is "Mind the Gap" - an expression now used on our railways. I wish I had bought the T shirt (or at least seen the movie).

This thread makes me think that Gordon Brown's idea of a British Day is daft.

OK, we are all British legally, but we all think of ourselves as English, Scottish or Welsh.
Why not make a bit more of St. George's Day which is also Shakespeare's birthday?
Give us the day off and let the Scots and Welsh have a day off for St. Andrew and St. David.

Wonderloaf is American. Honest.

Right now the thing that most encapsulates England for me is Big Brother on the telly.

George Galloway as a cat. Indefatigably.

I can't think of anything less English than people "making a show of themselves" Big-Brother style. The programme is a Dutch idea, and Galloway the kind of grandstanding "personality" (=ego-on-stilts) politician I associate with a much less party-dominated system - like (cough) America's - and he's a Scot anyway (albeit the kind that has Scots saying "Ah kent his faither&quot.

Top of the pops - Was one of the things I loved to watch each time I went to the UK. I am watching the last episode and wish I were there. When I read Hello magazine I think I am there!! Having a nice afternoon tea.

Yeadonite:

Bad news, I'm afraid. Top of The Pops - which was a terrific (fab, even) programme back in the days when pop singles were worth listening to - has finally been switched off.

It passing seems to have been mourned (or even noticed) by practically no-one under 40.
