What kind of town in Innsbruck

Innsbruck really isn't a town at all - it's a major city. I've never actually gone into the center, only driven around it on the Autobahn several times, and it seems to be a pretty busy place. I understand that the old central section is quite charming, but from what I can see it's surrounded by a large area that really doesn't look much different than the industrialized suburbs of most moderately sized American cities.

I remember hearing years ago that UNO (New Orleans) had a summer session in Innsbruck. I think the great advantage is that you can travel almost anywhere from there on weekends. Maybe classes are only four days a week? Perhaps none of this relates to your question. The city is in the Tirol so surrounded by mountains. The old town is interesting. My favorite memory from a day's visit in the 70's is that of the folk art museum, which I thought was wonderful. Of course you have to like painted furniture, etc.
Try to find out where the campus and/or dorms are. They might be near the old olympic site (I don't know where I'm getting these thoughts, maybe from a UNO brochure). If you've the opportunity to travel and earn university credit, go for it. Love those schnitzels! J.

Several years ago my daughter did the study abroad with UGA/UNO in Innsbruck - I went to visit her for about 10 days. Both of us thought it was very pleasant - it was in the summer - and travel to Italy, other parts of Austria and Gemany was easy to do. The old part of Innsbruck was very charming and you could easily get up into the nearby mountains. I would say if it is a summer program - go for it. If its longer than a summer my personal preference would be elsewhere like Italy, France or Spain but those three happen to be my favorite European countries so that is where I would choose to spend a longer period of time. I did the UNO program in Innsbruck in 1989 and loved it! Innsbruck was lovely -very clean, beautiful river running through the city and mountains all around. We did lots of day trips during the week (I only took 2 classes, so I had lots of free time).There were plenty of bars/nightclubs to keep us entertained in the evenings. We did only have 4 days of classes, so we took long weekend trips all around Europe. I loved my summer there!
