What is the temperature in the south of England like in August?

There's no such climatic zone as "the South of England",and I strongly suspect some posters are making completely spurious generalisations from very specific cases.
Most of central London has its own microclimate - substantially warmer in summer than most of the rest of S England - and the Tube and many hotels get the problem even worse than the rest of the city. Some central London hotels especially can be a nightmare on any warm day from late May to late Sept, since they not only get hot, but it's often either impossible or impractical to open windows, and even if you can they often open on to overheated central wells.
I've never experienced the problem outside London - though I daresay there might be some such places
The hotel concerned ISN'T in Bracknell (Bracknell is its post town), but in the pleasantish, if rather suburban, small town of Crowthorne nearby. It's always possible in such places for a room to be next to a kitchen (so it's superhot), or next to a busy road so you can't open a window (Crowthorne's pleasant: but its roads can be as noisy as everywhere else in London's Great Outer Suburban Maw). But the chances of hot weather AND your getting the rotten stuffy room are remote.
The reason a/c is rare in London is that retrofitting it's costly and running it in the kind of place that needs it is crippling. The reason it's almost unheard of outside is that it's unneccessary except on one day every five years.

Book without a/c - you can always rent or even buy a portable A/c if you need it.>>
lol sashh - you obviously haven't tried to do that in the UK. Not a chance. you might manage to buy a fan if you were lucky - but if the weather's been hot enough to need one, they'll have sold out! [Where do all the ones we bought the year before go? *&^%£ knows!]

Supposedly, the hotel in Crawthorne (thanks for the correction, flanneruk)has fans available. According to reviews from Trip Advisor, some of the rooms have windows that don't open. So the hope is that the weather is cool enough to not need a/c.

It's very unpredictable. Very few people have a/c at home, and it's not something I bother to look for when booking a place in the UK, but you might get lucky/unlucky and hit a particularly hot and muggy summer. But no-one can predict that right now. In fact, it could change from week to week.
Or it could be decidedly damp and drizzly.
Def bring something for your shoulders for the evening, whatever the weather, assuming you are wearing something light and summery for the reception. a shawl/cardi/shrug thing, it does usually get a bit chilly later in the evening. Unless it's one of those nights when it's baking...
sorry. It's England. We can have all four seasons in a single day.

It's like a yo-yo!
I was there last July/august and at times the weather was almost unbearable - like winter - cold damp miserable.
Worse than that many places turn off the heating for the duration of the summer months - taking a shower can be downright unpleasant.

All chinchilla owners know where the secret stash of portable a/c units are.>>
glad to hear it, sashh.
we're having a beautiful few days at the moment. is this the harbinger of things to come, or the only summer we're likely to get?
keeping my fingers and toes crossed for you, [and us!]
regards, ann

Don't cross your fingers for me please - I melt in Summer and I burn through clothes. Went out yesterday in 3/4 trousers, long sleeves and big hat.
I've got the a/c ready in my bedroom for if it gets any warmer.

sashh - statistically, the weather is far more likely to suit you than me then.
even you might like what we've got at the moment - sunny and warm but with a breeze [some might say a wind] to keep it cool.
normal - i do hope the weather holds fine for your friend [and the rest of us].
