What is the appropriate dress for women traveling in Turkey?
I will be in different parts of Turkey for 2 weeks in late May.. Is it appropriate to cover my legs and arms with long pants or skirts and long sleeved shirts?

I wore short-sleeved shirts and skirts or pants; capris would be ok. I did not see any women wearing shorts. Normal attire is fine. A scarf for the mosques is appropriate. You can buy lovely scarves in Turkey.

If you go into mosques you'll want to be wearing socks so pack shoes that you can wear with socks. If you wear sandals (and it might not be warm enough in the north for sandals) then carry a pair of socks with you to put on.

Like adrienne, I wore skirts or pants with tops that covered my shoulders. For visiting mosques, definitely bring shoes that are easy to take off and a scarf to put over your head. The attire I saw on Turkish women varied from traditional (in the countryside in/around Boğazkale and Cappadocia) through conservative Muslim dress (in Bursa) to haute couture (Istanbul); I don't remember shorts except on a pair of American teenagers exploring a ruin.
May is a lovely time to visit Turkey - enjoy!

Wear shorts at seaside resorts. kja was here in October, after the season for wearing shorts. Vacationing Turks, those who live at seaside resorts and fashion conscious Istanbul residents will wear shorts, small town and rural women will not wear shorts but will not be bothered by yours except in Central, Eastern and Northern Anatolia.
wear sneakers while exploring ruins as they will be more comfortable than sandals against uneven ground an dirt.
wear jeans if visiting unexcavated ruins like Termessos for protection against shrubbery and thistle but shorts for Ephesus, Myra, Perge and similar excavated and popular ruins because end of May will be quite warm.
Use sunscreen on exposed parts of your body.
wear hat at seaside and on antique site visits. also carry water.
Take Vitamin B complex to make your smell undesirable to mosquitos and antihistamines against any allergies you may have to pollen, food or insect bites. (Turkey comes high on the allergy index)
Personally, I do not like capris because I believe they make women look rather unattractive. DW has never owned either a capri or a bermuda but dozens of mini to mid shorts in our 36 years of marriage. -

Why do capris make women look unattractive? Do you feel that way about long trousers? The only difference between them is a few inches of fabric.
I think sneakers lack the support you need when walking around uneven ground.

adrienne, what women should wear when entering a mosque or a church has been explained above and at other places. Our experience is that it is the same for Buddhist and Shinto temples.
I have no idea what gave you the idea that they would or could wear shorts in places of worship or bare any other parts of their body?
Regarding footwear, you are correct that some sneakers will lack support. Others will provide much better support and protection than any sandal. I just wrote my views based on the type of sneakers we prefer and the type of footwear we have used in our decades of traveling all over Turkey, Italy, Spain, japan, Thailand, etc. Your experiences may be different and yo have every right to write above them.
Again, I am sure that there are some body proportions which will look good with capris bu a great many more will look better in longer trousers. The aesthetics of the matter has nothing to do with the amount of fabric, it has to do with the proportions of the body which is covered by that fabric. This is true for men as well as for women.
I prefer impressionistic, cubist and surrealistic painting to nature morte. -
I am changing my profile photo to one of DW (not in a mosque!)
who probably has never attended any mosque, synagogue, temple or church for the kind of reasons believers do, but has prayed at all of them, trying to reach towards a unity.

The part where you said that fashion conscious Istanbul residents wear shorts.
I was amazed and wanted clarification.
Your wife is cute and definitely has the body for short shorts.

We were remarking just this morning during our regular daily morning conversations that we have managed to keep each other young, specifically young at heart.
Here's a quote from Lewis Carrol that we remembered and shared again this morning, that i think is rather fitting for a travel thread :
(the Mock turtle) : “why, if a fish came to me, and told me he was going on a journey, I should say ‘With what porpoise?’”
“Don’t you mean‘ purpose’ ?” said Alice.
“I mean what I say,” the Mock Turtle replied in an offended tone. And the Gryphon added “Come, let ’s hear some of your adventures.”
“I could tell you my adventures—beginning from this morning,” said Alice a little timidly :“but it’s no use going back to yesterday, because I was a different person then.”

In defense of Chelebi Bey:
Capris make women look dumpy if they are worn with athletic shoes and socks.
Capris look great if worn with flats or sandals. Think of Audrey Hepburn.
Capris on men are unspeakable.
I have spoken. Let the rage descend upon my head.

otherchelebi - I love the quote!
Ackislander - Audrey Hepburn definitely. I was thinking of Mary Tyler Moore with her black capris and ballet flats.
I didn't know that capris were made for men but I hate to see dumpy middle aged men in shorts. I don't care what they wear on their feet.
Anyway, I've just returned from Walmart where I've stocked up on summer capris and I will keep your sartorial advice in mind, Ackislander!

How Capris look is a function of two things:
What you are wearing them with - no to sneakers and socks, yes to cute ballet flats
The length and shape of your legs (if you are short, have short legs or chubby ankles Capris are just not flattering - you need slim ankles and long legs help a lot). Agree this is a matter of proportions - an taste. I don't like them/wear them - even though I have long legs. Will wear regular shorts or those just at the bottom of the knee - somehow the Capris make my legs look dumpy.
