To put it simply, it's chocolate ice cream slathered with whipped cream.

Hard to find better anywhere. Some chocoholics swear this is the best chocolate treat in the world.

Indeed Tre Scaline is a restaurant in Piazza Navona, and you can get Tartufo, con or senza la panna. But they have a gelateria next door which is where most of it is sold.

Pza. Navona is arguably the most delightful public space in Rome, and strolling about with a dish of tartufo con panna is one of the most delightful ways to spend a bit of time in the city.

twenj

Ed.. You forgot it has cherries in the middle,,and it's not your plain old whipped cream or CoolWhip, its very slightly whipped unsweetened real cream!! don't mix it up with tartufi--truffles or tartufe--a hypocrite..I'd be a tartufe if I said tartufo wasn't the tartufi of ice cream treats!

Acckkk - - i started right on on composing an answer, and then just noticed out of the corner of my eye that Ed already has answered - - but I think I poured my heart and soul into this answer - - so, I will go ahead and post it...

Literally -- tartufo = "truffle" - - though i think of it as more mushroom-shaped - - and the name refers strictly to its SHAPE - - but it is a heavenly, decadently frozen chocolate dessert - - not exactly ice cream, and not really frozen mousse nor custard

but chocolate, concentrated on top of chocolate in frozen, melt-in-your-mouth pleasure...

con panna - - with cream - - can be "poured" - - or whipped, i think...

Best wishes,

Rex
As I said, Jody, "to put it simply". It's a bit more complicated to explain panna, which you have done. No sweeting, lightly whipped ... think of cumulus clouds on your tongue.
