I would ask for at least round-trip airfare to anywhere in North America, but I would really hope to get airfare to return to Europe. Haven't had the same problem, so can't advise on what others have done. Did get a free ticket (about $200-250 worth) for delayed luggage once (had to pick up at airport on Christmas Eve).

I had a similar problem with United. We had to get from Columbus airport to Dulles to catch our overseas flight to Paris, but our flight to Dulles was delayed, so we missed our flight to Paris. It was extremely hellish. We missed a whole day/night in Paris, as well. For our troubles, they promised us first class to Paris from Dulles (the next day), but eventually "downgraded" us to business class (which was fine). There was a massively embarrassing scene caused in the Dulles first class lounge (by a very rude United employee) about the "downgrade" to b-class. Anyway, I wrote a couple of scathing letters to the top executives at United, and all I got was some lousy upgrade certificates for my next overseas flight on United. Talk about being gypped!!! Considering the way United treated us, there is NO WAY that we will be taking another flight overseas w/them again. So, I guess they got off scot-free.

Airlines really have to start treating customers like customers, not like prisoners! It's like they have no one to be accountable to at all.

I would try again to get something a bit more satisfactory if I were you. What do you have to lose? I should have responded to the United exec by sending back the lousy upgrades and asking for a free flight, but, thought that to be too rude. Hey, at least you got something better than an upgrade!!!

Had a similar experience with United a number of years ago (maybe 5?) Flying from LAX to SFO was delayed because a flight had landed at SFO and blew out tires. SFO closed the incoming runway, but continued to send flight out (ours to HongKong was among them) When we arrived at SFO, there was no way to get to Hong Kong so we missed HK completely as we had to be in Singapore for business and couldn't leave the next day.(the problem was the date line and departure/arrival times) We received an overnight at the St. Francis Hotel in SF, cab fare to and from the city, meal vouchers which we used at Kuleto's and an upgrade from Business to First Class to Singapore the next day. Was it fair?? What do you think? It ruined our plans to see Hong Kong, but I don't know what else United could have done. Apparently they have to let the Asian bound flights depart by a certain window or they miss the window entirely and there were only 3 of us who missed the connection. And, got to Hong Kong 2 years later for a whole week. In all my years of complaining to airlines, I have learned to determine what it is I want for compensation rather than to leave it up to the airline. Also, we do need to be fair--a first class round trip to Europe will not be in the cards, sorry!

Sal, I truly attempt to maintain an understanding attitude when inevitable events occur. That said, the airline messing up your reservation is in a different class than an unforeseeable event such as bad weather or a mechanical difficulty, so I say, do your utmost to assist them to recignize their culpability and ultimate accountability.
