I read "When Christ and His Angels Slept", by Sharon Kay Penman. This book, historical fiction, was the story of the sinking of the white ship and the 20 year struggle between Maude and Stephen for the crown of England.

I have taken particular interest in the Plantagenet kings and have followed the stories of Henry, Richard etc up to the Hanoverian kings through historical research and the balance of her novels.

I have travelled to various sites in England including York, London,Warwick Castle, Canterbury etc to see for myself the hisotrical sites described in all of her novels.

I hope to get to Wales soon.

US

We really enjoyed Arles for many reasons--especially since Vincent van Gogh spent from February, 1888 to May, 1889 there. We saw many sites that inspired him to produce some of his best works. Alas, the "yellow house" was destroyed by Allied bombing in WWII. But we did enjoy a meal at "The Cafe Terrace on the Place du Forum". And after much searching, we found the Langlois Bridge outside of Arles. Even saw the hospital where he was taken when he cut off his earlobe. Arles was a strong influence on van Gogh and his painting. Jinx Hoover

I often think that my attraction to the South of France started with my reading W. S. Merwin's The Lost Upland. Since then I have added a few more authors who have written about this area. Merwin, who I think is better known for his poetry, has a new book just published that I must get as well.
The contents, scenes, characters and textures of these books come back to me almost in a subliminal way when we are in Provence.
