What area/town to stay in North Eastern Sardinia?

My girlfriend and I are heading to Sardinia in July/August for 8 nights.

We are starting in Alghero and then driving to the north east area to stay for 4 nights then flying out of Olbia to Barcelona. We are looking for the perfect location to stay in the North Eastern region. We are hoping to stay in a great location near nice beaches and restaurants. We're not after the big resort type locations, we're pretty relaxed and just want to enjoy the food and beaches around the region.. Can anyone suggest a good location to base ourselves in?

So far Santa Teresa is looking like a good option but we really have no idea.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!
Matt

It's really hard.

We have done this route 3 times and stayed in NE Sardinia 6 times in total.

Santa Teresa is the only "normal" coastal town on the North / North East coast. Of the others Palau suffers from being a ferry town, Olbia is quite industrial and most of the Costa Smeralda is anything but real.

There are a good few restaurants in town and many are pretty good quality, most are laid back. In addition, if you fancy a hugely local experience La Saltara in the hills above the town is a farm/restaurant which offers an incredible 7 course set menu.

From Palau you can take the ferry over to the La Maddalena islands which is simply stunning with some of the best beaches in Europe. You can visit the houses where Garabaldi retired, it offers an knteresting tour and insight into his incredible life.

If you also want more great beaches head for Cala di Volpe which is in the middle of the unreality of the Costa Smeralda. The beaches on this headland are incredible and the setting for James Bond films, just avoid the weekend when you may have to queue for a pitch.

From Santa Teresa you can take the day ferry to Corsica, Bonifacio is a stunning cliff too town, it has a vibrant street scene and makes a noticeable change to Sardinia.

Sardinia isn't like many other European beach destinations. Many Italian visitors either own villas or rent them, they appear to laze about the beach and then laze about their villas in the evening. As a result the towns aren't as vibrant as say Spain or Greece.

In short, I would base yourself in Santa Teresa and go beach hunting from there.

Do you want to a houses or hotel?
