That is gelato - three scoops of three different flavors, then doused in Bailey's. What's not to love?

The State Department should issue warnings about travel to Italy. France too.

Domodossola - two more nights here and then it's back to Switzerland.

We spent four nights in Chiavenna before coming to Domodossola, so have been eating too much for at least a week.

There's not enough hiking in the world to keep up with this.

Eating my muesli while drooling over your food photos, Mel! That strawberry tart would definitely be on my order.
I loved Chiavenna and Domodossola, and glad you are too.
Thanks for making me smile this morning.

Wonderful. I am also a "victim!!" After three weeks in Italy, returning home I found that my favorite jeans were too tight to wear! Had to try on several pair to find one with a more obliging waistline!!

Nice photos..have fun and eat as much as you like...not everyday will you have food as great as that!!

I’m also currently in Italy. I can feel the pounds piling up! How do people eat two courses every day??? I leave at least half my food and I’m still gaining weight! Even with skipping meals periodically. I hate to get on a scale when I get home.

Splitting a salad, a main and sometimes a dessert is all we can manage, but requires some negotiation as only one of us is a carnivore. No waste and we get to taste three items. Or we just order a main (or a caprese salad) each. We've been eating lunch out, and then skipping dinner or we have aperitivo at a bar and call it good.

But gelato on every corner has been problematic

Lunch at a crotto in Chiavenna was an eye-opener - I'd ordered a side of polenta in addition to a heavy main and both were massive. Way too much food.

We'll be back in Italy in December, so I'll need to live off yogurt between when we get home in a few weeks and when we leave again.

Two suggestions
1) don't order anti-pasta, prima, seconda, dolce. Just order a few courses or only one
2) do the whole holiday on a bicycle and you will come home lighter

We're hikers bilbo and definitely aren't doing the whole shebang as mentioned upthread.

Still...

I always thought it was frowned upon to only order one course. No? I canít handle two at all! Traveling by myself so no one to split it with.

Traveling by bike would be problematic with my luggage, Iím afraid! LOL!

I'm sitting here planning our next trip to Italy, and up you pop! I've planned many a New Zealand trip based on your trip reports, so you can be sure I will be following along.

I've never been in any restaurant in Italy that frowns on ordering only once course. Two of us were in a very fine (3-fork Gambero Rosso, the top rating by Italy's most respected restaurant rating service) restaurant in Fiumicino about two weeks ago and we both ordered only pasta....no issue whatsoever and they brought us a nice complimentary dessert afterwards.

I think that is a misconception that I used to read here on Fodor's years ago.....maybe it's just me but I have no hesitation to order one course.
