Wengen-Best 4 or 5 star hotels?

I know this has been done before, but I
'd appreciate it if all you experts out there would humor me just once more! What are the best 4 or 5 star hotels in Wengen?
Best views of the valley/cliffside/mountains from my hotel room balcony?
I was thinking Regina (nice and elegant--??good views??) (but I hate to have to dress up for dinner...). What's the Alpenrose like (ie views from room, room comforts and decor/bathroom, etc.)? Any other recommendations?

Thanks.
Beth.

The Caprice is a newer 4 star hotel with nice views from the rooms. You might give them a try.

Beth,

I think you've nailed the best 4-star in Wengen -- the Regina. Though I've not stayed there, it's on my list as the place to go if I overnight in Wengen.

I have stayed at the Alpenrose, but when I was there, it was a 3-star. The views were superb and the furnishings were cozy and warm -- more traditional than elegant. I think the bathroom also was more basic than luxurious (but I was in a single room, and those are usually small & lean). The reason I probably won't return to the Alpenrose is that I thought the hostess went overboard in her personal attention . . .

If you want to stay at the Regina, stay there! I think a pantsuit or coordinates would do it for dinner. Or if you don't want to do that, try some other restaurants for dinner and don't eat at the Regina (I forget if they offer rooms without half board). Or eat a large lunch and use room service for dinner - especially if you have a great room with great views. Or have a picnic dinner. Many hotels also have two restaurants -- one formal and one informal; does the Regina have a beer stube (I forget this as well, but I'm sure you can find out at the website)?

Also, I don't think Wengen has a 5-star. The only 5-star in the area (besides Interlaken) is the Regina in Grindelwald.

Finally, you could just ask the restaurant. Once, upon arriving in Beaulieu sur Mer pretty tired & rumpled, I asked the hotel concierge if I could eat in the restaurant just "like this." I got the nod, and I would guess that you will too!

s

I stayed at the Alpenrose and it was wonderful. It's not elegant, just cozy and comfortable with fireplaces, lots of lounge areas, fabulous views, very adequate rooms and great food. I cannot imagine what the previous poster would mean by "too much personal attention". The management was very helpful but polite. I would strongly recommend this hotel and I sincerely hope to stay there again someday. Ahhhhh...

Everyone is entitled to an opinion; I think s just felt that she didn't need all that "mothering". If you look on Fodors hotel rants and raves you can read reviews from both s and me. I love the Alpenrose as well for all the reasons that Gina wrote. It is not a fancy hotel and may not be what you are looking for but you will certainly feel cozy there...and the food is great.

I second s, Regina is definitely a very elegant and stylish hotel with fantastic views. You should book a room to the south in one of the upper floors. To me it had a kind of atmosphere from the past times. Dinner was great. When I was there we had a gala dinner one evening each week - formal dress required. The other evenings you could wear jeans as well.

Ingo

WOW! You guys are great! Thank you so much for your info. It really helps!

Ingo, or anyone else, another quick question about the Regina...specifically about the view. I believe the Alpenrose has a view overlooking the valley (almost like it's perched on a cliff)--am I right in guessing that? Does the Regina have a similar view--ie "perched" on a cliff overlooking the valley/mountains? Or is it a view of the plateau?
Also, from what I gather about your post, am I right in assuming that there is no dress code for meals, except for one night a week?

Thanks!!!!!

Beth

Alpenrose overviews the valley and the mountains, Regina only the plateau and the mountains.

It is true, there is usually no dress code in Hotel Regina for meals.

I.
