David, You might be thinking of the Wieskirche (slightly different spelling), the church in the meadow. It's not a hamlet, it stands alone about a half hour north of Neuschwanstein. To quote Rick Steves, "it's Germany's greatest Rococo-style church". We think it's definitely worth the trip and the whole area is lovely.

Thanks, gang.
I wasn't sure if I was looking for a town (which I had heard was a possibility), or just a church in a town. I know that Weiskirsch (however it's spelled) means White Church. That's all I know. Supposedly, my father's family is from that town/area.

My husband and I visited the Rococo-style church, which was beautiful! If you visit it, study the ceiling. After we left and back at our hotel in Hohenfurch, I read about the church and the ceiling. It's actually a flat ceiling painted to look like an curved ceiling! We wanted to return because we were amazed when reading about it!

about 25 years ago, i took a detour off the road to Fussen on my bike to see the church at Wies. As I cycled up to the church, I was very disappointed as this was a not insignificant detour during a day of cycling 75 miles or so.

BUT WHEN I WENT IN...it was worth it. just amazing.
