Weird Weather Ques for Greece

Hi all,

I've been trying to search the internet, but can't seem to find the answer to this question.

Does the weather in Greece vary much on the different islands compared to the mainland? Specifically, I'm wondering if April weather would be warmer in Thessaloniki (which is in Northern Greece but seems kind of "protected&quot or on Crete (which is Southern but a windy island!)

Anybody know for sure? Or know where I can find out?

Thanks!

Yahoo! Weather has a link called Greece Regional Weather That lists almost 75 different Greek cities and islands. Click on each to get current and 10 day forecasts... AND quit a few of them have a clickable line that says "Records and averages" that shows weather month by month. YOu can click on Salonica (which is Thessalonika) and Heraklion (crete), for example.

This is a good site to bookmark.

PS -- Don't forget, Thessaloniki has all that windy weather coming down out of the mountains... and I have not experienced Crete as such a "windy island." It's big enough that I find it less affected than a small cycladic island like Mykonos... especially of course as regards the summer 'meltemi'.

There is also historical weather on www.wunderground.com

Not sure if it would list all the Greek islands (probably not) but maybe enough to give you an idea. You can look at weather for a specific place, for each day, for the past few years.

Crete will be a lot warmer than Thessaloniki in April.

It does get the meltemi, but not in April

>>Does the weather in Greece vary much on the different islands compared to the mainland?<<

I'm not quite sure what you mean by that statement.

If it means Does the weather vary much between islands?, then the answer is no. Greece is too small a geographical area (about the same size as the state of Kansas) for temperatures to vary much north to south - maybe 2-3 degrees F.

If it means Does the weather vary much between mainland and islands?, then the answer is yes. The ski season will still be underway in April, and weather will be cold in the mountains of the mainland. Thessalonki, on the coast, will be warmer, but not as warm as the islands.

A website useful for quick reference is: http://www.weatherbase.com/weather/c...=GR&refer=

Try being on the south coast - or up in the highlands where all those windmills are
