Weekend Visits from Lausanne
Husband working in Pully near Lausanne in July.
I will spend weekdays visiting locally (as far as Chateau de Chillon) with 9 yr old and 7 yr old, and have plenty of materials from collegues.
We hoping for suggestions for 2 weekend visits further afield, please.
We are specifically trying to work out whether we can manage without renting a car, we will not rent one during the week since our apartment is right by the office and right near a transport hub.
Gstaad has been recommended.
Transport to & from?
Hotel recommendations?
Must see?
I am very tempted to try to get to Turin or to Genoa (for the Cinque Terre coast)
Would either be feasible for a weekend? Would a car be needed?
We are open to ALL ideas! Especially want girls to see fabulous mountains, since we live in the flatlands of Dallas, Texas at present!!
THANKS SO MUCH!

Hi dendleju,
Yes, trains are the way to travel from Lausanne for your weekend breaks -- both of your children will be travelling for free. You can get all the schedules you'll need at the Swiss rail site
www.rail.ch
Did you know that your visit to Lausanne will coincide with the famous Montreux Jazz Fest, 2-17 July? You may want to catch a few performances.
Anyway, yes, Gstaad is a great option for a weekend visit. It'll take just about two hours to get there, and you'll go via Montreux and Zweisimmen.
However, if you want to see the high Alps, you may want to go a little farther -- to Zermatt or to the Jungfrau region in the Berner Oberland. It would be a cool and unique experience to stay in a car-free mountain town, towering above the valley below, so the longer train trip might be well worth it. Train trips to these places will be around 3h to 3h30. Again, you can get the exact schedules at the rail site above. For more information on all these areas, see
