Hopefully we will be in Verona in September for the opera.

Never been south of Rome and considering spending a week in Positano prior to Verona.

Original plan was several days in Rome and three nights on Lake Como (we've been before to both)

Questioning whether there will be enough to see/do along with some veg out time. Our interests? After a year of not going ANYWHERE, who cares?

A week in Positano would be lovely. You could make day trips by boat and/or bus/car to Sorrento, Capri, Ravello, Amalfi, Vietri and even Naples or Ischia if you tire of the beauty of Positano. Definitely worth doing.

We rented a house in Positano for a week and loved every minute. We did lots of day trips via ferries and bus. Capri and Ravello were two favorites. Can’t wait to go back.

I think it depends on how you want to spend that time. I'm a museum junkie and not a shopper or lounger, so I would probably split the nights between Positano (5) and Naples (3). Even with a private driver, Positano to Naples takes about 90 minutes each way, and to Pompei at least an hour. If Pompei is on your list, a visit to the archeology museum in Naples is really a must. Capodimonte in Naples is one of Italy's largest and greatest art museums. IMO, Naples is an underrated destination.

I'm sure you're aware that the journey from Verona to Positano will take most of a day, esp. if the departure from Verona isn't early morning.

Like Jean I'm not a lounger, so if I weren't an avid hiker (I am), I'd get antsy after a few days.

I would take mobility into consideration - a week would be too long with my husband's challenged mobility. Not sure about your husband's mobility. But Sorrento would be a better choice for us and might have easier day tripping possibilities.

The Amalfi Coast is breathtaking and absolutely worth the journey but only because I was also able to enjoy the many other riches of the area on what is likely to have been a once in a lifetime trip. It’s a challenge to get around, even to see what’s relatively nearby (I stayed in Amalfi). If you’re thinking of including Capri, Pompeii/Herculaneum, or Naples, I’d recommend at least one other base. In addition to Amalfi, I stayed in Sorrento and Naples.

We had six nights in Sorrento a long time ago and found plenty to do. Lots of day trips by bus or train. I think Sorrento would be logistically better placed than Positano for day trips.

Personally I would look at Amalfi--old-world charm at Hotel Luna. Lots of walks; great bus conections; you will wna to to taake bus to Cetara to eat one night. Walk to Atrani, also, and driver to Vietri and the mozarella makers near Paestum.

I appreciate all the additional comments and suggestions. We have considered a number of aspects and continue to feel our first choice, Positano, the chosen hotel, and the transportation arrangements to be made, are the most ideal in our particular situation.

Great..now we can al lsend good thoughts your way so that you will be able to go!! I have a partially refundable booking at a hotel in southern Spain for early March but looks like that was wishful thinking on my part!!!! I even knew it when I booked but went ahead anyway...

Have you received the vaccine in Broward county, by the way? I will be in Palm Beach County next month and hoping I can get it there...I know they take out of county people but wondering how long you waited and if you even got it.....thanks!! ek

Great, looking forward to this vicarious visit. Before my trip, a friend recommended that I take a look at the San Pietro so I asked my driver to make a quick stop on my way to Amalfi. The view from the terrace back to Positano was fabulous, would be a lovely place for cocktails, https://www.ilsanpietro.com/restaurants-bars/bars/.

I surmise you will have a driver..so a trip to Paestum would be a possibility. The terrain there is pretty flat for easy walking, If you are staying at a place like the Sirenuse or San Pietro you will be in heaven. Or so friends who have stayed there reported.- We've stayed at the Poseidon... which was very nice...but not in the same league. Anyhow, I do hope it will all come off as planned !

The only driver we will probably have is the limo service from FCO southward. As to hotels, I tend to be one of the biggest money-wasters ever born and have periodically reminded myself how foolish it was. Since we are staying for 8 nights "The Siren" is out of the question given the room view I'd rather have. But this is in some ways a possible end-of-life visit for one of us so I'm still thinking it over but tending toward the Eden Roc.

Certainly a week in that area is no too long at all. But as spectacular as Positano is, I would pick someone else to base. You certainly can do day trips from there but they'd be easier from Sorrento. From Sorrento you have far more than a week's worth of things to choose from but it's not as 'beautiful' as Positano.

I would love to have a week in Positano. We have been to Positano twice and we stayed at the Eden Roc both times. Our vacation pace is usually pretty active but we seem to slow down and just enjoy Positano and our day trips from there. I see you have already made most of your decisions about your trip but maybe you can get some ideas from these reports and pictures.

Positano is certainly a stunningly beautiful town, but unless you are part mountain goat, the constant ups and downs to get around could get pretty old after a couple of days.
