Website for French language video tapes
I am trying to teach my daughter French. I purchased somes language books, educational video tapes and cd-roms.

I would like to buy some children's movies that are in French. Does anyone know of a website where I can purchase these. I would like for it to be a USA site so that the prices will be in US dollars and the shipping/handling will be reasonable. I found some foreign sites, but the costs for shipping/handling made the purchase unreasonable.

P.S. My daughter is 8 so I will be buying things like Disney, Asterix, Madeline, etc.

Also, a site that sells used videos for less money would be very good to know about.

Julie,
First, I must laud your efforts to acquaint your daughter with another language at an appropriate age. She is a lucky girl to have a mom who is so very aware of the value of this.

There is a web site, www.101language.com. The company is located in Pasadena, CA & carries some of the things your mentioned. There's no mention of used videos, however. Shipping charges do not appear to be unusually high. You might want to try www.louisville.edu, also, as they carry an extensive selection of French videos, but I'm uncertain what the children's selection is like. (You might be able to get a phone number off the web site, though, & then call & get some personalized customer service.)
Best Wishes,
BC

Good luck - - I think you will have better luck trying IN France - - - www.fnac.com - - for example.

Virtually ever Disney video is available in French, though not in the "right" format (NTSC vs PALS, I always forget which is which).

I have pursued this before, and it is very frustrating - - Disney in particular totally ignores its (potential) French-speaking North america market (in Canada). 16 stores in Canada (none in Quebec), and not a French video in any one of them. Amazing, considering that they have 30 stores in France! I have checked the Canada situation trying to find videos in French for families here in Ohio, in the French "back-to-back" program (www.afac.org). I am surprised they don't get dinged by the French government. It seems like you can't sell anything in Canada without French labeling!

Best wishes,

Rex
Rex, I did find one place.

Here is the website:
http://www.infrench.com/

But it doesn't have a very good selection of videos that are not "cartoons". I know my child will need to see the person move their mouth in order to fully understand the language. If you want kid cartoons in French, this is a good site.

Julie,
Also, Amazon.com has a few things that might work. They have a series for kids called "Bonjour Les Amis". Also, the film (that inspired the American film 3 Men & A Baby), 3 Men & A Cradle, is available in French from Amazon.com

We got a video ordered for us from Amazon of Celine Dion: Live in Paris that my cousin really enjoyed.
Good Luck,
BC

I live in Wash DC which has a big expat French community and we have a French video store here which is just what you need. It has tons of videos and the good thing is, it also rents videos, even by mail, so you won't have to invest in buying those films (which can be expensive, around $30 each). They have Babar, Tintin, Disney, many kid's films in French. Here is the URL: www.francevision.co.uk/videoclub

(BTW I don't recommend buying from a store abroad like FNAC as the format will not work in US VCR, I'm pretty sure).

I would try DVDs. Many Disney DVDs contain French dubbed audio tracks. The region 1 release of the Rugrats movies also contain French dubbing. Many DVDs contain both French audio and French subtitles(although the dubbing and subtitles do not exactly match.)

As an ex-French teacher (retired May, 2000), I would suggest the following sites.
http://www.teachersdiscovery.com

http://www.francevision.com/home.asp

http://www.infrench.com

http://www.francovideo.com

I have used only the Teacher's Discovery catalog for ordering videos. Their website doesn't offer much but you can order their catalog from it and then order by phone or online. Bravo to you for giving your daughter such a valuable skill. She will no doubt love French and pick it up so much more easily at her age now than she could later on.
