Just to add my 2 cents worth.....

Part of the reason you need to dress warmly in London is that the buildings are not as heated as we are used to in the US, so it's harder to get warmed up even indoors. And yes, it is a damp, bone-chilling kind of cold.

We were in London several years ago over the holidays, when there were record-breaking cold temperatures, and we just about froze!

I wore my silk long underwear almost every minute, and had to go out and buy myself a warm muffler.

Fashion be damned-- a hat is the best thing to keep you warm.
I'm a big believer in the saying "If your feet are cold, put on a hat."

Actually, I just bought a beautiful fur headband that I'm planning to wear this winter in Paris, and I think it will be quite elegant, thank you.

I live in London, you don't need silk underwear, a ful length coat is perfect, it's not the Antartic!

Very true. We were in London last December and it was rainy and in the 40's. We're from Michigan and we thought the weather was very mild. But the OP is from Florida - where a cold day is when it goes down to 55 at night. Southerner's have a different internal thermostat than Northerners.
