Lisa,

You can get really detailed info at www.weather.com. Look for the box that says "enter city or US zip". Just type Rome, Italy (or any other combination of city, country) and it will give you the current weather and a 10 day forcast. Look under the current weather info of the words "Averages and Records" and click on it. This will give a breakdown of avg high and low temps and precipitation. Click on a particular month and you will get a breakdown by day of the month. This will answer your question in amazing detail for anywhere you might be in Italy, which has a very large range of climates.

Italy stretches from the Alps to the Mediterranean so, as you'd expect, has vastly different weather depending on which part you're visiting.
N Italy (e.g the Alps to the Po Valley)in March would still be quite cold (av 50s F) and misty. Southern Italy basking in warm sunshine. Take yr pick!

We were there last March 16-25. Started in Venice. It was cloudy and rained one day. The highs during the day were probably in the 50 to low 60s and cooler in the evening. We worked our way south and rest of the trip the weather was 60-70s and sunny during the day. About 10 degrees cooler at night. Our last 2 days in rome it went above 80. Bring layers and a raincoat. March is a great time to visit.

I just wanted to tell you that it snowed in Umbria and further south last April (Easter weekend). Not being from the east coast of the U.S., I can't compare but others who are say it is about the same from north central to a little south of Rome as it is in Virginia, D.C., lower New York, etc.

My bottom-line advice is to dress with layers. You will not need heavy coats but you will need a jacket or jackets (one rainproof), lightweight wool or heavy cotton.

Good luck. Have fun.
