weather and golf in scotland

How bad is the weather in Scotland from December thru March. Are the golf courses open and will the weather permit golf. Any suggestions on Royal Troon, St. Andrews ETC as far as distances from glascow would be helpful.

Scotland is not as cold as the plains states or upper midwest. But depending on the specific area - winter weather is cold, wet, windy and often snowy - blizzards even. Plus the days are very short - especially in Dec - Feb.

Winter is not the time for a golf vacation. Any reason you want to go then?

The weather is anywhere from miserable to bad; but all is not lost.

The golf courses are open, tho' depending on ground conditions there may be restrictions- winter tees for instance.

Troon and Turnberry (and any number of local courses) are all on the southwest side of the country, easily accessible from Glasgow. They benefit from the Gulf Stream, which means they are unlikely to be snow or frost bound (Rain, however.....?).

They are links course which means they sit on sand and drain well and are a good option for winter golf.

Have to concur with the Scots experts above. It gets light by 10am, dark again by 3pm. Inbetween, the weather can be grim to say the least, although crisp, clear but very cold days are also in abundance. East coast in particular is cold(er).

Ditch the idea if you can come back during a more clement time. If not, come prepared.

Hey Tony

I see your fellow country man David Millar is doing quite well for himself in the Tour de France. He got the white jersey yesterday after his excellent time trial. Go Scots....
