Just a minor correction on the above post:
With a superlative three-course lunch at just £28.50 per person, and excellent wine from £14.50 per bottle, it is easy to see why The Capital Restaurant has continued to attract the world's gourmets for over 30 years.

Lovejoy: Delighted to find somebody who appreciates the Capital as much as I do! Three/four courses? We tend to include coffee and Petit Fours as a 'course' in itself, but point taken, I should have made that clear! Having said that, I think that I might have to book myself a table there again soon, drooling just thinking about it! Hope you enjoy your trip over here will_travel_for_food - it's a myth that we don't know how to eat, I promise!

I don't think I made a comparison between UK and US supermarkets. I simply said UK supermarkets are dreadful. I agree with your view that American supermarkets are dreaful too.

but John G, I LOVE refrigerator magnets! I wouldn't be caught dead in acid washed anything though.

London has the best restaurants of anywhere I have been... and I'm still totting up the cities.

This has been an amusing thread, although some people seemed more interested in attacking the originator/other posters than in attacking the subject matter.

"It is on Basil Street" - now is that "Baaahsil" or "Baysil"?

Well, tomorrow I am going on a fast to lose 3 lbs gained from eating at London's vast array of fab resturants last week. I could spend months just flitting(no, major power walking to lose the tonnage) to all the places that look and sound delish. In fact, I would say the sheer numbers of the differant types, make it the foodie mecca for me! Try Sapori on Drury Lane, went there on a Sun. eve, when a lot of places closed. Instead of bread for noshing, gave veggie sticks and olives to nibble before dinner. It was not fancy Italian, but more a family type found in Italy. Also Porchette in Bloomsbury for good basic Italian fare. Judy

The restaurant mentioned in the first reply is the Wolseley; its at 160 Piccadilly, and I believe the people from the Ivy are involved in it. According to the Tatler Restaurant guide, just out, it has an A-list crowd. I haven't been yet.
Isola, 145 Knightsbridge; have been there several times, beautiful restaurant, Italian food. There's a popular bar too.
The Belvedere, Holland Park; one of Marco Pierre White's restaurants; lovely setting in the Park, great food. From the same owner; Mirabelle, Curzon Street, Mayfair. Very smart.
And for indian, I recommend Tamarind, Queen Street, Mayfair.

To Tulips ... Thank you for giving helpful advice on restarants in London ... something I clicked on this thread to find. It would be nice to not have to plow through nasty banter to get it.

will_travel, anyone who has said that to you, is way-y-y off the mark and hasn't been there for year's and thinks of only a ploughman's lunch(that I like in the right place as shepards pie) There are some of the best restaurants there. Tho I'm sorry to hear Tante Claire closed.
