We Only Have A Week
As much as I would love to have more time...

Please give us some advice on must see. Here is our itinerary. Leave Boston, Mass March 13...arrive London very early (if flights, etc. are on time) on 3/14. Reservations at the Kenilworth Hotel (#99 channels.uk)Leave London noonish (haven't bought train tix yet) on 3/15 to arrive in Edinburgh (16:30 approx). We have a flat rented #30 per night for a 1 bedroom...discount for construction noise that is irrelevant for the times we'll be in the flat) in the old town about a 10 min walk from Waverley (found on aboutscotland.com). 3 nights/4 days in Edinburgh. Back to London on 3/18...probably taking another noonish train from Waverley...before spending the night and flying out the next day from Heathrow. We'll be staying at the Paddington Best Western (near the Heathrow Express) on 3/18. So, if you only have 1 day in London on each end and 3 days in Edinburgh...what should we NOT miss? We LOVE just exploring neighborhoods. Museums are not high on the list. I like gourmet food, love to cook. Hubby likes just walking around.

Thanks,

Lisa

Hi Leslie,

You are right...London is not our chief destination. We are flying to Heathrow because we are using Continental vouchers (they actually let us fly VA!) from a previous trip where we voluntarily bumped. Flying to Heathrow gave us the best price and we thought we could experience a tiny bit of London while we were at it.

I have considered flying to Edinburgh from London instead of the train. May still do that. We like train travel and we were thinking we would see a bit of UK countryside on the ride. But since we only have a week...I think your strategy bears considering. Anyone else have an opinion on this?

Thanks!

Lisa

I think you could have a great two days walking London. How about walking past 10 North Downing, Big Ben and Parliament, Trafalgar Square, Buckingham Palace and hope to see the changing of the guard, Tower of London and Tower Bridge and you could even step into Westminster Abbey and explore for awhile.

Since you like train travel, I'd consider an overnight train on ScotRail from London to Edinburgh or the reverse. I did it this past summer and really enjoyed the extra time it gave me.

In Edinborough I'd recommend the Grassmarkt area. I believe Clarissa Dixon Wright (of 'Two Fat Ladies') owns a cook book store there. At the other end is a cafe 'Two Thin Laddies' for contrast.

I also recommend the tourist bus pass for a day. It loops around most of the city's major viewpoints a couple of times an hour. It can save on the walking since Edinburgh is quite hilly.

I would change your last night to stay in London as opposed to out by heathrow. There is a fast train direct from Paddington to the airport. This would make it easier to spend a night out in London before you go. I recommend getting a last minute ticket to a play and going for a "curry."

Greetings Lisa:
Whenever I have only a day to stop over in London, I simply plant myself @ a pub and let the spouse travel about and site-see to her heart's content. You'll always know where he is & you won't waste precious moments looking for one another.
Remember, Guiness is for strength.
Cheers...
