Does anyone have any suggestions for accomodation in the San Marco area of Venice, preferablly 2-3 star for around 170000L and with a web-site.

Mark, last January, a fellow traveler asked the same question and got about 5 or 6 good ideas. Search under Italy, the orginal message was posted on 1/30/99.

Mark, if you can't find anything that suits you in your price range, go a step higher and stay at the Bauer Grunwald, a short walk from Plaza San Marco. It is a treat. <BR> <BR>Or go all out and go to the Danieli.

When are you going to Venice, since prices vary from simple to triple depending on the time of the year. <BR>

A warning if you use www.hotelguide.ch. The rates quoted for hotels in Venice do not seem to have any basis in reality. And at least one hotel I contacted said they do not honor the 20% discount that Hotel Guide claimed. That said, it seems to be a good site for looking for hotels, and seeing pictures and such. They may be better for US hotels as far as rates are concerned.

I finally got into the Accademia in Dorsodura after three tries by fax. So, if you're unsuccessful the first time, don't give up...keep trying. A friend of mine just returned and got a room at the Pagganelli by faxing from Siena just before going up...a gorgeous room looking overlooking the canal. Of course, some times are more difficult...just keep trying.

Hi Mark, <BR> <BR>In October, we stayed at Hotel Orion. As this was booked from Australia by our agent for us, we did not know what to expect. In was very close to the San Marco Sq, about 2 minute walk, and about same to Rialto Bridge. It was a small hotel, very clean, no grand entrance (in fact we missed it when we walked past) no lift, nice breakfast and room. Our room was small, bathroom tiny, but I saw bigger rooms when walking around. I don't know if they have a web site, but it was a 2 star, and adequate for us, considering we weren't in it but to sleep. I have seen it on some other site, as listed above, but don't recall which one. I will try to find it for you, and let you know. Denise <BR>

Arriving by rail, we proceeded straight ahead across a bridge in front of the station, following signs to the Hotel Basilea. Small, comfortable, quiet, located on a small side canal. I have no idea of its mailing address, but a Michelin Guide should list it. We stayed there on two occasions, and were completely satisfied. Because it is so close to the railway terminal, we found lugging luggage was at a minimum.
