Ways to get from Madrid to Toledo

Four of us will be in Madrid for a couple of days and would like to take a day trip to Toledo. Can anyone tell me the best way to get there (train or bus etc...)

Thanks!

Liz
There are tours you can take from Madrid to Toledo, with a guide. They leave from Madrid, you visit Toledo, and then back to Madrid. These are via bus. I did this a while back and while I don't recall what it cost it was a pleasant experience. The only down side was the stop at the "shopping experience" just outside of Toledo, but even that was not so bad, bought a few (probably over priced) trinkets. As I recall, the tours left from the office that was located close to the Palace in Madrid. I am sure your hotel can give you the information.

I don't know about unescorted trips but I would have to think that there would be train or bus service to Toledo from Madrid. If you have time the visit to Toledo is well worth while. It is a very interesting and historical city.

Hi, Liz.

My husband and I took the train from Madrid to Toledo and back again the next day. It was quick and painless, and I would recommend it. I definitely wouldn't do a car.

Liz, we looked at the bus and the train and the bus was cheaper and ran more frequently. I believe it took less than an hour. Toledo was easy to visit on your own, they take a very long siesta in the middle of the day (like 1:30-4 pm) when the museums and some of the shops are closed. The bus drops you at the bus station and from there you have to walk for a bit to get to the stuff you want to see. There may also be a city bus from the bus station to the city but I don't recall as we walked it.

Take a train. From the train station a bus runs to the main town plaza.

Since Liz hasn't checked back yet, could it be that she was referring to Toledo, Ohio ????

Liz:

Maribel sent me the following information for my Madrid trip - it was right on the money! She recommended the bus over the train due to better schedule.

I have also provided bus info for Avila & Segovia.

Regards

TOLDEO:
"Galiano Continetal" bus from huge Estación del Sur (metro: Méndez Alvaro, grey circular line #6, metro station
underneath bus station). Departures every 30 min. Express bus doesn't stop at every town along the way- should
run every hr. in high season (50+ min. ride) Drops you off outside walls, then city bus to center of town. Take
bus to center rather than walking. It's a really tiring, uphill walk. Or...
Regional Express train from Atocha- takes 1 1/2 hrs. Departures less frequent. Then local bus from Renfe
station to center. (www.renfe.es)

AVILA:
Train from Atocha or Chamartín (tons of daily departures on Talgo, Intercity, Regional Express, etc.) Shortest
trips take 1 hr. 20 min. (www.renfe.es)
I'd take a taxi from train station to entrance to walled city. (a mile away) Or...
"La Sepulvedana" bus from Paseo de la Florida #11 But fewer daily departures (Call 91 530 48 00). Or
"Autobuses Larrea" (? may be another name) from Estación del Sur. Avila's bus station also outside city walls. I
think train is much easier-quicker.

SEGOVIA:
"La Sepulvedana" bus from Paseo de la Florida #11, next to Hotel Florida Norte (metro: Principe Pio, grey
circular line #6, when you come out of metro station, you'll see bus station across the street in front of you)
Hourly departures. My recent trip took about 1 hr. 15 min. Very easy. Pleasant, short walk along a pedestrian
arcaded street from bus station to Acueducto. Much better than train trip.
Train takes 2 hrs.
Out of curiosity, what was the cost of the bus versus the cost of the train for a roundtrip, return the same day ticket? Thanks. Tammy

Liz,
Just a bit more info re bus versus train:
The most economical (by a hair), frequent and *sometimes* quickest means of transp. to Toledo is the bus. A one-way ticket on "Autobuses Galiano Continental" from the huge Estacion Sur de Autobuses station costs 590 pts. Except during the month of Aug., buses depart every 1/2 hr. (at :00 and :30), beginning at 6:30 a.m., except on Sun. when the first departure is at 8:30 a.m. The last return from Toledo is at 10 p.m. If you catch the "express" (non stop) service, the trip will take slightly under an 1 hr. The 2/3 mile walk from Toledo's bus station to the Plaza del Zocodovar is quite steep. You can also take a bus from the bus station to the historic center (#5 or #6), and the fare is 110 pts.

The "Regional Express" train departing from Atocha station costs 780 pts one-way (don't know what a round trip fare is), and there are morning departures about every 2 hrs. The trip to Toledo takes about 1 hr.. 15 minutes, although the return takes about an hr. For example, there's currently a departure at 8:30 a.m. arriving Toledo at 9:47 a.m. (check at www.renfe.es). Toledo's Moorish looking Renfe station is about a 20 min walk from the Plaza, but you can also take the city bus. Afternoon Regional Express trains from Toledo to Madrid depart about every 2 hrs. Currently Renfe has a departure at 4:30 p.m., arriving at 5:28, and another at 6:57 p.m. arriving 7:57.
Hope this helps you to decide.
