So since we now can't carry liquids on the plane, will they allow you to carry an empty bottle and fill up while on the plane. It's just so much more convenient to have a water bottle rather than an open cup of water. While on the plane, I usually refill my water bottle. I just go to the food station and one of the attendants fills my smaller one from one of their large ones.

What are people doing these days? Are they maybe serving bottled water on board now so you can keep and drink from the bottle?

Crazy question I know, but I'm a water freak and can't go too long without some!

I thought so, too. Anyway, I've only flown a couple times since January, and on my flights, no, they certainly weren't giving people entire bottles of water on board.

From what I have read here on other posts, you can no longer take the empty bottles, or any other special containers intended for water for that matter. The only type of water or drinks allowable are those purchased at the airport AFTER passing through the security check, and those are maked as such. I guess you could buy a couple bottles at the airport and use those to refill.

You just can't take liquids through security. You can take water on the plane as long as it is purchased airside.

American Airlines has always given us a small bottle of water, but it's not enough, so I'm glad to know that we will be able to take a bottle bought after passing through security. Also, I always ask for club soda, and I guess not many people do, as they always give me the whole can, while my husband gets a cup of soda.

We used to take 3-4 bottles of water on our long flights. If you buy it at home by the case, it's usually about 25 cents per bottle.

What irks me now since you can't bring your own water anymore, they rip you off by charging you a couple of bucks a bottle after security.

I don't know why you can't bring an empty plastic water bottle thru security and then fill it up on the airplane -- they usually have those 1.5 liter water bottles on long flights.

The rules seemed vary from one airport to the other. For instance, from my experience in these two months, at Heathrow T1, no empty bottle but you could buy water after the security; empty bottle allowed at Heathrow T3. No empty bottle at Gatwick North terminal, nor water(purchased after the security)
allowed on board either.

From Krakow airport, no empty bottle allowed, purchased water O.K.

Hi c2Paris, I just had a conversation with a friend who flew from her home in Italy to Mexico City. Her one complaint was that she could not take an empty water bottle on the plane. She had to purchase bottled water after going through security and she said the price for the bottle water was a big ripoff. Now again, she flew from Italy and changed planes somewhere else in Europe so of course that has nothing to do with flights leaving from the US but I would imagine it would be the same in the US. I would just buy a bottle or two after clearning security.

We flew to Italy last week, and no you cant take an empty bottle on the plane, ( i too am a water freak) but you can buy some when you pass security, mind you its only a litre half litre bottle,which wouldnt fill a flea!!

I truly (naively) thought that with the liquid ban, they'd give out whole bottles of water on transatlantic flights....wrong. Flew to and from London on AA last month. They still just give you little cups of water. Believe me, when it's the middle of the night and you're in the middle of the row and everyone between you and the aisle is asleep, you'll wish you'd paid a couple of bucks for a bottle of water after security. I vowed that I wouldn't be so cheap coming home, but then the water bottle vending machine (1.5 pounds!) was just eating everyone's money.

Well at ATL you can carry your empty water bottle past security and just refill it from the water fountain (or if you are like me from the Delta Crown Room water)

Or you could con a FA or airport employee to take it for you, after all they are "exempt" from petty rules like this. (For reasons that make NO SENSE except to prove the TSA is run by idiots!)

You are not allowed to carry an empty bottle through security to fill it up with tap water.

You are allowed to pay an arm and a leg after security to buy another bottle and carry it on the plane.

If you change planes and go through security again, you'll have to toss that bottle and buy another. If you have 2 layovers, it's 3 bottles.

If you ask for the can, most times they will give you a whole one.

If you have an aisle seat you can walk to the galley as often as necessary to refill your little cup of water from the large bottles they have there.

I just finished the whole TSA website listings about carry on and I could not find where it specifically bans empty water bottles. Can someone clarify that please?

It does sound like the rules are different for different airports - I've flown a few times since last August (from Nashville, Chicago Midway and Gatwick) and have always been able to take an empty Nalgene bottle with me, then fill it up from a water fountain after security. (Except at Gatwick, where I couldn't find a water fountain!) I actually flew out of SeaTac the day the carryon restrictions went into place, and had a Nalgene with me that I had forgotten to completely empty. They dumped the water out and handed it back to me after discussing for a few seconds.

My kids flew AA two weeks ago LAX-BRU and could bring on any liquid purchased after security. During the flight, AA gave only a cup of water free and charged $2 for a liter (?) bottle.

I flew domestic AA a couple days ago and ago and was charged $2 for a liter (?) bottle.

I know it's one more thing to piss you off about flying these days, but, really, it's only a couple bucks.

Flying out of La Guardia in January '07 security was letting people through with empty water bottles to fill up at fountains on the other side.

I just came back from Paris and Prague. Flew out of chicago to CDG and into prague airport. I always had an empty water bottle and it was not a problem filling it up from the fountains. My flights were taken from March 20 to 29, 2007.

Idea - Carry balloon or similar device.
Idea - Load up at breakfast or before flight with water.
Idea - saturate cloths with water, load into Zip-Lok bag and into coat pocket.
Idea - Load small plastic containers with water (or whatever) carry in outer coat.
