Its a shame that the Warwick Castle web site is such a turkey

Don't be put off - it is a great castle to visit - as for trains etc i'm not sure - you certainly would be able to get a coach from London.

- why particularly Warwick Castle though?

Yes, You can get to Warwick by train, and it's an easy day-trip.

I believe that Warwick Castle was developed by the Madame Toussaud's people (as in the London Wax Museum), which is probably why the on-line marketing is so slick (and perhaps overdone).

If you are traveling with children, this is a great place to visit. Many of the rooms and towers have been restored, redecorated, and filled with recreations of various periods in the history of the castle. There are also people in period costumes (knights, jesters, lords and ladies) wandering about the grounds.

If you aren't traveling with children, it's still worth visiting. For one thing, Warwick and it's owners have had a major impact on English history. I thought the displays, etc were surprisingly well done. Warwick also makes an interesting contrast to the scenic but lifeless ruins that are all that remain of so many medieval castles.

Keep in mind that this is one of the most highly visited tourist attractions in England. I would recommend going on a weekday if at all possible, and arriving before opening.

If you are there when the gates open, you should be able to do justice to the castle and grounds in half a day. You might consider spending the balance of the day in Stratford or Oxford. Both are nearby and can also be reached by train. Alternatively, you could spend your time wandering about Warwick town before heading back to London. Two of the medieval town gates are still extant, as well as Lord Leicester's Hospital (Elizabethan Era?).
YES-go to Warwick Castle! It really is a must see on a trip to London and its surroundings.Dungeons,Cromwell's armor, etc. The summer has knights on horseback answering all your questions as you stroll around the grounds. A book that I would recommend to all if you are going to England is:22 Daytrips out of London. I loaned my copy to someone and haven't gotten it back so I cannot remember the author. It takes you to 22 different areas that you can go for the day out of London (by train, bus or car). It gives the numbers for buses, closing times and map of the area.Check local bookstore as it has been in print since the 70's and is in paperback. It is a shame that all of England's treasures(Stonehenge,Warwick
Castle, etc.)have gotten so commercialized but the upkeep/taxes have driven them to this!Have a super trip-Debbie
