Fodors

Coaches are shown in the Lithuania pages of http://www.inyourpocket.com/.
But the long train journey is no problem if you're asleep. On uneven dates at 2158 a train with 2-berth and 4-berth sleepers leaves Warsaw Central: it reaches Vilnius at 0752, or 0852 until 24 March. Naturally, you save a hotel bill.

Please write again if I can help further. From 6 January my e-mail address will be [email protected]. For safety's sake, could you also please copy to me at [email protected] ?

Ben Haines, London
I agree with Ben. An overnight train maybe your best bet. Also most of the delay is on the border - whatever you take (and I would rather be sleeping thru it than siting). As for cars, unless you have your own - a rental company from Poland will not allow you to take their cars to Vilnius (and you do need special papers/insurance (commonly called "green card" since color of those form are green). Another problem with driving with foraign plates in Lithuania is the local police as well as theft (both doing same).

Hi I know this is off the topic a bit but I saw Petewr's e-mail. I am planning a trip to Vilnius in the fall and was just wondering iff car theft is that much of a problem there. I have driven in eastern europe beffore and parked in locked parking areas without a problems while I stayed in a hotel. Is it more of a problem there than other places? alan

I've read and heard that auto theft is a problem everywhere in Central/Eastern Europe. I plan on renting next fall in Poland, Slovakia and Rumania. It looks that I'll have to rent seperatly in each country, or return the car to the origional country. In addition to that, if you take the car to other countries, you'll have to purchase special green card insurance. I plan on buying/taking additional security such as a club.
