War history in France
We plan a May,'99, trip to England and France mainly to visit Second World War sites, museums, etc. We have alot of information on the London/Duxford/Portsmouth part of the journey...and Normandy as well. But information, maps, guides on other war history in France seems more difficult to find. We are especially interested in the Allies drive east following D-Day and also interested in Compiegne, Reims, Verdun and anything on World War I as well. Can anyone point us in the right informational direction? Thanks in advance.

Nes

You might be interested in www.ww2tours.com and www.worldwar1.com. You may want to peruse military history atlases. You should be able to find these in any good library - certainly in a college one if there is one around. Note where the major events occured and then look these locations up in a good detailed travel guide, such as The Blue Guide.

Everytime I post, I think of something else. If you haven't been to the Army Museum at Les Invalides in Paris, definitely try to get there too - an incredible collection; not only the World Wars, but all of French military history - you can see Napoleon's uniform, horse, tent, etc. And of course next door is the soldiers chapel and the tombs of Napoleon and several other prominent French generals.

There is a museum about the French Resistance in Lyon:
http://www.ec-lyon.fr/tourisme/Lyon/Musees/400.html.en
