You can get the Camper Micros on Zappos. They can fast ship them. If you're in the States you have plenty of time. Shipping and returns are both free. Get two sizes. Return the one that doesn't fit. I wear either a 6 1/2 or 7. In European sizes I wear a 37. I bought the 37 and they fit perfectly.

Mine were a black canvas (or leather?) version, but when I was in my late 20s I tromped all over Italy in these:

And they were the most comfortable travel shoes I ever had!

Point is, flat is not always better. And you have to go with what works for your feet/body/gait.

Have to chime in as I have all kinds of foot issues, but insist on being cute on my European adventures! I have just spent a small fortune and an inordinate amount of time putting together my shoe collection for upcoming trip to Spain. Dare I say the land of great shoes! While I hope to buy some wonderful pair while there, I would never count on finding it. One brand that is go to for me is orthoheel they make some dressy flip flop styles that are crazy comfortable and can go from beach to so-so dress and I can wear them all day sight seeing. But as others have said those are my feet not yours. Whatever you decide good luck and have a great time!
PS I second the motion for zappos free overnight shipping and free return, I just ordered 4 pair, wore them all with socks around my living room for a couple of nights and sent 3 back today......the best company ever!

I saw a good program on French TV a couple of weeks ago about these sandals which my French daughter in law always wears. They are called Les Tropeziennes and are hand made in St Trop. Though I think you will find there are plenty of similar ones on offer.

Also a fan of Ecco Yucatan sandals--nice heavy duty soles that are great on cobblestones, gravel paths, etc. Have worn them for years and always get black ones from Zappos. They are not especially stylish but comfort comes first.

This thread is so long because footwear is the most important item of clothing, and there are a lot of good suggestions here. Happy shopping !!

<< I'd ... suggest 1 sandals, 1 sneakers, 1 flats, plus flip flops. >>

Well, there's one roll-aboard filled.

I only take two pairs of of shoes, one pair of walking sandals nice enough for going out to dinner and one pair of closed walking shoes, both black. To allow for my feet swelling, I wear the sandals plus black socks on the long flight to Europe.

Love the looks of those Rodinis!

Comfort for me was most important and I sse no reason why you can't get that with style as well. If you don't have foot issues you should be able to get both. Another thing that was important to me was weight. Light weight shoes are a plus for travel and comfort. Several brands, the J-41, some Merrels and many others are practically weightless.

I just got back from 2.5 weeks of walking 5-7 miles a day in Rome and other cobblestone-heavy places and have nothing but great things to say about the Ahnu Karma (Zappos: http://www.zappos.com/ahnu-karma-black-nappa-leather). I was looking for a lightweight, low profile shoe that would be easy to pack and would keep me from tripping. These were excellent. I second a pair of Merrell slides, too. I alternated between the two pairs for the entire trip. Have a great time!

Hardly!! The sneakers are on your feet when you're on the planae or packed up going place to place. 1 @ sandals, flats, flip flops easily fit flat along the bottom of any bag without taking up much room.

When I backpacked for a year around the world, I had a pair of SAS sandals, and they lasted a whole year, very comfortable and I wore them everywhere. They are still making them the same way. My only other shoes were a light hiking boot, for trekking in New Zealand, Malaysia, Thailand, Indian Himalayas. Years later, I found very comfortable, but much more fashionable sandals, and the still wide, but slightly more narrow heel was wonderful at home, but terrible on the cobblestones of Paris, they kept on twisting sideways, had to be careful or my ankle would twist also. Wishing I was back in the SASs. Look for a stable, wide, low heel. Quick slip-on flipflops do not take up much room and would be great for going to a community showers if you are in the budget hotels or hostels, or a swimming pool, beach. I find sneakers ugly and get wet easily, and unless I was planning to jog, would recommend a closed flat walking shoe rather than sneakers, as able to wear in more situations.

I love all of the suggestions here! Before my sister and I went on our trip to Bosnia/Croatia/Slovenia, scheduled for late April/early May, we had endless discussions about shoes. I limited myself to a carry-on size suitcase and a tote. The biggest challenge we had was that the weather forecast immediately before we left was for unseasonably cold weather. So...we were going to need closed toe shoes that we could wear with socks.

In the end I took flat, super-comfortable tan walking shoes (which I wore endlessly on very uneven cobblestone streets during the day); black padded ballet flats (only ended up wearing these a couple of times at most); casual gold slip-on flats (very lightweight) that were dressy/neutral so fit with everything; and, gold stretch-strap sandals with a moderately wide 1.5 inch heel to go out to dinner. all of these packed super flat. If the weather was forecast to be warmer I would likely have traded in the black ballet flats for some simple flat black sandals, or nothing at all.

Sandals with a major wedge heel simply take up too much room!

Just bought a pair for $29 at Penneys. Usually pay much, much more. We'll see how they wear. If poorly, can just toss them.

How much fits in a small suitcase also depends on what shoe size you wear.

I can recommend Ziera shoes for travel..a kiwi brand of comfortable shoes but it is a risk to buy shoes online. As I live in NZ there is a store close to home and I buy at least one pair a season. Good for people who have broad feet from too many summers going barefoot.
I took a pair of Lulu ballet flats to Walt Disney World this year and they were so comfortable I ended up wearing them every day. I also took some Hush Puppies 'ugly shoes' but they got too hot.
Wear what is comfortable. My best ever buy was a $15 pair of ankle boots which I took to New York and wore every day. They were ruined when I came home but for $15 it doesn't matter. Cobblestones are hard on the feet.

Whenever I travel to Italy or Spain, I make sure I have some spare space in my luggage 'cause I (as well as my husband) can't resist the shoes that I see in the windows. Much cheaper than over here in Belgium and something different. I don't care much for comfy, I care for stylish and special.

Clarks and some Eccos work for me.

A friend swears by Hotters.
