Walkie Talkies
Does anyone know if walkie talkies (2 way radios) are allowed in London? We will be visiting in August and my husband and I would like to keep track of our teenagers by using walkie talkies. The sales clerk said there may be a prohibition because the London police may use the same radio frequencies. Thanks in advance.

Catalina,

Walkie talkies sold in the US are not legal in many other countries. Have you considered renting cell phones? There are some cheap pre-paid cell phone plans in the UK (one popular brand is "Orange").

You may want to take a look at a previous discusssion on this topic (albeit about radios in France):

http://www.fodors.com/forums/threadselect.cfm?fid=2&keyword=157

rega rds,

David White
http://www.KidsToLondon.com
[email protected]

I checked the Motorola website, which lists the countries that allow U.S. walkie talkies and Great Britain and France do not. The Motorola website allows you to register with them, and they will email you if there is a change in the law. Just in case anyone else is interested. No walkie talkies for us. Thanks to all.

You can buy walkie-talkies over here, just not very good ones - http://www.dixons.co.uk/product.asp?...A3HC9AV87NA269 (Dixons is a large electrical retailer in the UK)

I second the recommendation of cell phones. In Europe they have a wide range of options for cell phones that don't involve contracts but only pre-paid phone cards. Also many companies offer temporary rentals. My husband and I started doing this on our last trip and found it was sooo much easier then trying to figure out the pay phones. We plan on doing this again in spring and I am looking into Orange.
