Technically it's not a river and technically the original City of Istanbul was only on the European side. The Asian suburbs (Uskudar et al) were gobbled by the new regional <i>Municipality</i> of Istanbul in a local government reorganization in 1984.

Istanbul is actually is starting point of Europe, but yes there is an Asian part of the city as well opposite to the RIVER
we call it Bosphorus straight which connects Blacksea to the Aegean or vise versa......
Istanbul always had two parts for the records... Gardyloo I like your style
Voltage is 220 throughout Turkey. 99% hotels will provide a hairdryer.
Its better to have an adaptor in your luggage.
