Last summer, we bought a Nokia 6021 from Vodafone (US delivery) for use in France. The deal at the time with Vodafone was that we would only pay for calls made once we bought the phone. Vodafone called several months after we returned to say that they were discontinuing their US services and they no longer have a US number where you can contact them to sort out phone issues.

We are going to Ireland next month, and I would like to use the phone there. I tried calling the Irish number for Vodafone's Customer Svc today and just got tangled up in a phone tree. Can anyone suggest a Vodafone number where I can reach a live human being? Any guesses on whether this phone will work in Ireland?

As insurance, I have ordered a rental phone from Verizon which will be programmed with my Stateside phone number, however, each call made on it in Ireland is pretty expensive. I think we would do well to have two phones - one that people in the States can reach me on and another for calls inside Ireland.

Does someone on here more expert than me about phones know if a Nokia 6021 could be workable in Ireland? Would I have the same number that Vodafone gave me when we bought the phone?

The Phone will work in Ireland as its a triband.

Best suggestion is that you take a spare phone and uses the Vodafone Ireland pay-as-you-go service where you get a prepay SIM and insert it into the spare - that means that calling any Irish number will be from an 'irish mobile (number anyway)' and the costs will be much reduced.

Nokia 6021 seems to be an European Tri-band (as opposed to US tri-band) including both 900mhz and 1800mhz, so you are ok there.

Then, your phone needs to be unlocked to accept a SIM card from the carrier other than the one that came with your phone.

Do you think I can get it "unlocked" at a Vodafone store in Dublin? I would really like it to work, since we are going to New Zealand and Australia later this year, where I had also hoped to be able to use it?

If I use it with a SIM card, would people be able to call me or is it just an outward-calling instrument?

Vodafone store won't unlock any phone. For that you have to go to an independent phone shop advertising unlocking service - not difficult to find in cities. You may be able to get it unlocked in the US - just google unlocking Nokia 6021. With a local SIM card, you can do both - your friend will have to dial, and pay for, an Irish mobile (cellphone) number, which may be expensive. At least you won't pay anything to receive calls.
