I have not been to Gibralter, but was just in Spain and met some folks who had been. They said it was fun for part of a day. They just stopped by on their way from beaches further east to Cadiz.

I also came across a guide book in Spain which I liked for the general tour information. It's the Footprint series. They had one specifically for Andalucia and I think it included Gibralter. Like all guidebooks, it turned out to have some date and place errors, but nothing we couldn't live with.
Marcia

We visited Gibraltor when we were in Spain in October. We parked on the Spain side and walked across the border. Don't bother trying to drive onto Gibraltor, the traffic jam will tie you up for hours. Once there, we paid a guide about 10.00 or 15.00 dollars per person for a tour. There were 4 of us and he drove a large van. These guys are all trained and the tour was necessary just to get around. It took about 2 and a half to 3 hours and then he dropped us off in the shopping resturant district, very near the border and we spent the afternoon there. All in all it was a great daytrip.

Thank you both for helpful information. Still not certain whether we should go just for a day or longer.
Maya, I've been to Gibraltar twice. Once in the early 90's by car. It was easy to get on the "rock," but when we left, we had to queue for hours as the Spanish basically searched every car.

The second time was by Cruise Ship. Mary is right. We payed a tour guide $15-20 each and he took us all over, to the caves, St. Michael cavern, bunkers, and up to see the monkeys. All that, including lunch, shopping, and picture taking wasn't any more than a day trip at the most.
