Have just got an email from our Villa Klothilde in Zell Am See indicating that their renovation work would not be complete and they would not open in May. Guess we will need to look for a hotel in Zell Am See. What about Kaprun and Bruck? How are they situated in terms of railway stn as we will be relying heavily on public transport?

Any ideas?

We also stayed at B&B Am Moos and I can recommend a restaurant nearby that was really good and kid friendly. It is on the opposite of the street and overlooks a riding arena. The family also runs a B&B within the property of the restaurant. There are windows along one side of the restaurant that overlook the arena which makes for a really cool dining experience-especially for the kids. Sorry I can't remember the name of it. We also liked Stifskeller in the old town-touristy, yes, but entertaining with Mozart music and it would be memorable for the children.

Two more queries :
1. At the Coffee House we usually would prefer creamy thick sweet coffees preferably hot or cold. Which is the one that we should try? Sorry for this question as we are not coffee drinkers but would certainly like to try them in Vienna and would like to select the right one.
2. Is Stelze the same as Schwein Haxen?

I don't think coffee in Austria is ever thick ... you might try ordering a "Brauner mit Schlagobers" (a 'brown', i.e coffee with milk, with whipped cream on top), either 'klein' (small) or 'groß'/ 'gross' (big), or maybe a Franziskaner, which is basically a "Melange' (i.e. a cafe latte, or a coffee mostly made on steamed milk) with whipped cream on the top. Sugar is up to you as that will be on the table -if not, just ask.

We stayed at the am Moos several years ago and I can't remember much of the neighborhood. However, we were driving and found that it was easier to leave our car at the B&B and catch a bus into central Salzburg, which bus stopped very close to the B&B. Can't remember if you said that you are going to be driving or taking public transportation throughout your trip.

In Salzburg I thought the highlights (and good for kids too) were

1.Salzburg city museum (http://www.salzburgmuseum.at/173.0.html) Relatively recently renovated, not too big, exhibits very creative.

2.Salzburg modern art museum (http://www.museumdermoderne.at/en/th...m-moenchsberg/), the "Moenchsberg" location, great modern building, at top of hill with great view of city.

I will start a separate thread for the attractions which are must-sees and which can be skipped.

Earlier we wanted to do the Grossglockner and with that in mind, we wanted to stay in Zell Am See. Any suggestions for alternate mid-range budget accomodations in Zell Am See which are conveniently located as we will rely heavily on public transport?

Also, which ice caves should we do - Eisriesenwelt Caves at Werfen or the Dachstein Rieseneishohle (Mammuthohle). We will be in Salzburg for 5 nights and would like to do it as a day trip? Is it feasible? Which one is more beautiful?

Haven't stayed here but I remember seeing it when we were in Zell and it's in a good location. It gets pretty good reviews on Trip Advisor and they open on 7 May.

I was really looking forward to the Wienerschnitzel at Figlmueller's. It was HUGE, but very dry and tasteless. In this case, size does not matter! I was turned off by this until I tasted a truly delicious one in Schoenau am Koenigssee at Waldhauserbraeu. It was tender and succulent. That will be my 1st meal when we go to Germany in May!

The restaurant near am moos may be Reiterhof Moos. I've read good things about it. We plan to try it during our visit this summer when we stay at Haus Steiner near there.

Thanks for the clarity bettyk, singfree, bigtyke & Traveler_A. Just wanted some clarity of what to do and what we can skip.

Bettyk - Gruner Baum has regretted as the open on May 7 and we need from May 4-7. For the time being have got an apartment close to the station called Hella Dorn. Hope it is good and conveniently located.

Since you are staying at Haus Steiner, try dining at Blobergerhof on Hammerauerstrasse, just around the corner from Haus Steiner. GREAT food at reasonable prices. The place seems to attract a lot of Americans & Brits. We always try to speak German wherever we go, so our waitress was surprised to learn that we were Americans, and was pleased that we were trying to practice our (somewhat limited) German with her. At any rate, Blobergerhof is a good place. We stay up the street at Steinerhof (Moosstrasse 138), also a wonderful place to stay.

PS- Bus 21 (which you will take) runs infrequently late at night, up until about 11 pm.

Yes, Traveler_A is right. The name of the restaurant in Salzburg that is at the riding academy is Reiterhof Moos. There are actually several restaurants right around there (within 5 min. walk) that are very good. My experience is that often one or another of them is closed for a night or two, and the others are open. Check ahead of time when you get there to see which ones are open. They are all kid-friendly.
