What mode of transport do you plan to use? Bus, train, car, bicycle, etc?

Wayne, There is a boat/train connection from Vienna to
Melk/Krems

Viator offers a 13 hr. coach trip to Salzburg.

What would your choice be?

Thanks, Tania

Salzburg is about two hours away by train, and there seems to be a departure every hour, each way. I believe some trains stop in the vicinity of Melk; if so, you might be able to fit both into a day trip.

The fastest train connection between Wien and Salzburg is 2:38. I don't think it makes sense to combine Salzburg and Melk in one daytrip.

What about a boat trip on the Danube to Bratislava?

The day trip to Melk with a sightseeing cruise on the Danube and more makes for a interesting and diverse day trip. Most interesting

You can purchase a combined offer for 44 euro including train from / to Vienna, boat trip, admission to Melk Abbey and the museum in Krems.

This website can assist you.

The trip to salzburg is a 3 hour minumum bus ride each way- thus your day in Salzburg is a little limited.

Also be aware that Viator is only an agent and theyx do not actually conduct the tour or provide transportation.
If you decide on Salzburg, perhaps easier and providing more time to see what you wish is to take the frequent train service.

The town Of melk is not on the main railway line and you must transfer in the town of St. Polten to reach it.
Tis really eliminates a combined Salzburg- Melk tour in one day.

We went directly from Vienna to Melk without changing trains.

If you buy the combo ticket which includes the train and boat ride on the Danube, make sure of what you are buying. We purchased a combo ticket last fall - it happened to be the day after they changed the boat schedule to the last trip of the day down the Danube being 1:30PM. Of course, we missed the boat.

We had to buy and pay again for a return ticket to Vienna from Melk. When we arrived at the train station we immediately went for a refund and were told since we used part of the ticket, we could not be refunded for the part we didn't use on the train or the boat. It was their mistake because they didn't tell us of changes and our mistake because we weren't aware there were any changes.

I did email oebb but never received a response.
