Vicolo Del Cinque - Trastevere - anyone familiar with this location in Rome?
We're thinking of renting an apartment from sleepinitaly.com at this location for DH and I, plus our 2 teen grandsons for next March. We love the layout, but are unfamiliar with this location. Would it be too inconvenient, noisy, unsafe? The website is: www.sleepinitaly.com/files/apt_vicolocinque.html
Thanks for any information!

Bardo, thanks SO much for the encouraging response! I've read some posts that said the Trastevere area seemed "too far away" from the central area, but when I checked on Mappo.com, the walking times didn't seem much different from those in the Campo de Fiori area. I think I will "grab it"!
Thanks again.
Thanks again.

Hagen,
Some parts of Trastevere are indeed "too far away" (it's a large neighborhood). Fortunately, your apratment is in the part of Trastevere closest to the river. It's important to map out the exact location (as you did).

mkdiebold - Indeed it is I!!! Yes, I heard back from SleepinItaly this AM, and that apartment is available. There are 2 other ones I like, both in the Campo de Fiori area, but they only have 1 bath, and the sleeping arrangements are a little convoluted (using several sleeper sofas, etc.). We both like the layout and looks of the one in Trastevere the best, but having never been there, just a little unsure of the area. Did you ever get to that part of Rome? A lot of people seem to like it, just hope it's not TOO funky for old fogies like us!

I happened upon some sites that had photos of the street ( Vicolo del Cinque), and while some looked charming, a few looked downright seedy! There are no photos available of the outside of the apartment we're thinking of renting, plus it's on the ground floor. I've read the agencies only post the best shots, and to their credit, there are many photos of the inside, but still I'm wondering if this would be a safe place to come back to at night. Also, would our grandsons feel comfortable in this area if they ventured out alone? (Not sure if they'd want to do that, but you never know). Thanks for any further information.

Rome, and Italy in general, has an almost ridiculously low rate of violent crime. There is nothing to worry about.
Trastevere is a lively area, filled with pedestrians, day and night, and the area where the apartment is located is particularly nice, with lots of restaurants, cafes and wine bars and shops nearby.
Trastevere is not seedy, especially not that area...it is, however, a bit of living history, one of the oldest sections of Rome. Photos likely do not even begin to do it justice.
I think that apartment is so lovely, I have bookmarked it for future reference. You made a nice choice!

Faredolce, it sounds like you're familiar with the street itself, so I feel encouraged by your reply. I had started second-guessing the choice, especially after I read about all the trattorias, bars, shops and such along the street. Couldn't figure out how a ground-floor apartment would fit in, plus it seemed noise would be a gib factor. But I guess that's pretty typical Rome. I agree that the inside looks very nice. I'll be sure to write a report after the trip!

Trastevere is a wonderful area-this is my preferred zone in Rome, along with the Gianicolo. You can actually experience life in a real Roman 'hood, rather than joining the zombie shuffle of tourists who are parking themselves in and around the Piazza Navona/Pantheon area.

I think I probably walked more than a few times down that street when I was last in Rome, in April, and stayed in that neigborhood. I think it is going to be fine, Hagan. You have two very lucky grandsons!

mkdiebold, you're welcome to come along! For those reading this, mk is my SIL, and she's been on the boards the past few months planning her fabulous trip to France this September. Hmmm, if she can go with us, maybe I can go with her.....

Hagan, glad you clarified that "my interest" in your grandsons rests in the fact that they are my great-nephews! Wouldn't want anyone on this board to think of me as a kinky child molester.
As for our trip to France, I think it's a wonderful idea for you to join us!
