If you're are old enough to obtain a Motorcycle liscence in the USA, you are oild enough to rent a Vespa. I checked into this last year, and 3 rental places I called in Italy said you need a Motorcycle license or at least a Motorcycle permit to rent from them. You didn't say you were American, but in case you are, the permit just requires taking a written exam and paying a fee for the year long permit. For the liscense, you have to take a road test on a motorcycle or Vespa.

I'll bet you can find places that will rent the 50cc Vespas without documents though.

Hi P,

Are you planning on committing suicide?

Thanks, we are planning a trip to Italy and my daughter wanted to know, but she'll only be around 15 at that time. And no one is planning on commiting suicide, though the driving in Italy can be a little dicey!

Vespa is Italian for "wasp". They are a nuisance.

Hi play,

Quite seriously, you do not want to drive a Vespa, motorbike or motorcycle in Italy.

It is extremely dangerous.

Vespas are not toys - but actual motor vehicles - and more important - on the road with all size cars and trucks. To try to drive one in italy without a motorcycle lic - and significant experience in handling one - is a seriously dangerous thing to do.

There was a post recently from a couple who rented scooters in Greece - and both crashed. Suggest you check it out before pursuing this further.

My hubby and I (both well over 15 years old!) had visions of the two of us motoring around on a scooter in the Amalfi coast and Capri during our honeymoon.

The reality was that no one would rent them to us b/c we had no experience with operating them. I'm glad they were so cautious-- we did not expect the roads to be quite so twisty or crowded! It would have been crazy of us to try.

You shouldn't rent a motor scooter or bike without a license (and plenty of experience), and you shouldn't drive one without protective gear. Believe it or not, falling off a Vespa at thirty mph hurts exactly as much as falling off a Harley.

However, once you meet those requirements you are probably safer in Europe, where drivers notice motorcycles and face hefty fines or prison for "not seeing" them, than in the US, where it appears to be open season.

It's a motor vehicle - not a toy - so you need a driver's license. That depends on your state or area (here in NYC you have to be 18 - I know a lot of places it's 16).

They won;t rent you anything but a bicicyle unless you have a drivers lic.
