Hi. We spent a week in Riva del Garda last September and did day trips to different towns along Lake Garda, if you have a sunny day try Limone, it will be packed with visitors but there are lovely cafes along the water to sit and enjoy the views and people watch, it is a gorgeous town, also has a very nice public beach at one end, that may be a nice thing for July. We also visited Malsecine and Sirmione, both have preserved castles and sit along the water, very scenic. In Sirmione we got caught in a heavy rain but found a cafe and enjoyed sitting outside under the awning and having drinks. Enjoy your trip.

Verona has a well preserved and restored colliseum, as well as a fictional connection to Romeo and Juliet. There are a few churches worth seeing and the town has a large central square with cafes and restaurants.

If you approach Lake Garda from the East as you must from Verona, (assuming you're going by road in a hired car)Limone is on the opposite side of the Lake, although gettable to via one of the many boats that ply the Lake in the summer. If your visit to Lake Garda is a day trip only, then you won't have time to see all of the towns round its shores, so I'd see Sirmione, Desenzano and maybe Bardolino if time allows.

I like the medieval section of Verona, there is also a Roman theatre ruins and a rebuilt bridge from Roman times.

The ampitheater is in great shape, still used for Opera. The Opera was done for the season when I was in Verona but I'd love to attend one there.

I just returned from Verona and loved it. The churches are beautiful, very different from those you see in Rome and Florence. You will be there during opera season, if you go to the opera it is worth seeing the ampitheater otherwise save your money, you can see everything you need to see from the outside.

I thought the Roman ruins across the river and the gardens were worth seeing. You get a great view of the city from the Roman ruins. They don't look like much from the outside but they really are fabulous. There are two large piazze where you can sit and relax and people watch.

I don't know about restaurants but there is a Venchi gelato store on the main street that should not be missed.

We were in Verona two weeks ago and enjoyed the guided walking tour (in English) offered by the tourist office. The tour is at 2PM and costs 10E per person. No reservations needed. The tourist office is near Piazza Bra at Via Degli Alpini.
