Venice - Where to stay?

Hi,

I am going to Venice in November for 3 days and I was wondering whether it is too far to stay in Santa Croce or Cannaregio. Most people stay I should stay near St Marks but there are some great places to stay further out, what should I do? Also please let me know if you have stayed at any of the places below.

The hotels I was thinking of are:
Santa Croce:
- Hotel San Cassiano
- Hotel Al Duca di Venezia
- Hotel Al Ponte Mocenigo

Cannaregio:
- Ca' Dogaressa

"Most people say I should stay near St. Marks ..... "

Don't know WHO you've been talking to ..... certainly not folks on this forum. The entire city of Venice (I'm referring to area encompassed by the six siestere) is not that big. One is easily able to get around by foot or by vaparetto. Answer to your question re: location ... No, not a problem to stay in one of the other districts.

DH and I stayed at Hotel Al Ponte Mocenigo for two nights. I highly recommend it. Loved the location. Walter & Sandro are perfect hosts.

I recommend you avoid hotels near the Piazza San Marco or the Rialto. It can get awfully crowded around those areas midday. I prefer the sestiere of Dorsoduro; it's quieter, less crowded but reasonbly central.
