Does anyone know the easiest route to go from Venice to Rome then Positano. I think their are trains that run to all of these but I am not sure how convenient they are. Also, should we take the bus once we get to Naples to get to Positano, or is their a better mode of transport.

I just did a simalar leg Venice to Capri, I decided to fly, there is a train that goes from Venice to Naples but it takes pretty much all day.There are inexpensive flights mine was just over $100-
I would consider it if time is an issue for you, and I find when I travel time is always an issue, never enough of it.

May I ask what carrier you were on. I researched a flight and was shocked to find it was approx. $500. We are going in June. Could that be the reason for the price?

Fluffy is right - Fly. Trains will take all day, whether you go via Naples or Salerno.

The night train to Salerno gets in at 4:40 AM, the one to Naples at 6:00.

Three discount carriers serve the Venice to Rome route: AlpiEagles, Volareweb and Meridiana. You'll need to call Meridiana for fares as their online booking has been out of order for months - welcome to Italy:

But if you intend to stay in Rome along the way, the train is probably the best option.

BTW, plugged in November 9 as a date in the AlpiEagles site and they have 3 daily flights with a fare of EUR 29 before taxes, fees etc which comes to a total of EUR 60 all in (one way of course). Not bad, eh?

Sorry about that! For Venice to Rome I would take the train - it's a time-consuming hassle getting to/from airports on both ends.

Don't know how long your trip is or if you have been to Rome or Venice before...

You can fly from Venice to Naples if you are not staying in Rome. It's about $250-$300 on Alitalia round trip or as others have mentioned, take the night train.

I would plan to stay at least 5 + days in Rome if you haven't been there before.

I have spent a total of 14 days in Positano and am going back again, but 4-6 days would be enough to relax and enjoy it and do some day trips. If you just want to see it, 3 days minimum. Be sure to visit Ravello and particularly Villa Cimbrone.

I would also spend 4-6 days in Venice. The last time I was there it rained 3 days, so it is always good to allow some extra time. If you feel you have seen everything (which you never can) you can always just use those days to just relax and enjoy.

If you go in June-Sept., you can take the ferry from Naples to Positano. If you do a search you will find detailed information on getting to Positano from Naples, Salerno, and by ferry.

Alpi is the airline I took and I booked my flight well in advance( at least 4-5 months) just consider all the added costs of the train.
I've done it both ways and sometimes I figured I only saved $50 when it was all said and done and wasted a whole day.If you have time you'll find a reasonable flight, just make sure the hydrfoil will be running late if you take a late afternnon flight out of Venice.
I have no regrets.

We took the sleeper train from Venice to Naples. We had a roomette-it was very good. Time was at a premium for us and it worked out well. I think that we left Venice at 11:30pm and arrived in Naples about 8AM. We slept very well and enjoyed the trip.
