Venice or Budapest?

Never been to Budapest but the three or four days we spent in Venice (in May) were nothing less than magical. It is nothing short of gloriously appealing and romantic. It is the best. (Apologies to Paris.) Wander all day, have a nice lunch (with the ubiquitous melon and prosciutto), get lost, have a nap, visit Peggy G's museum, eat a nice dinner, go for a gondola ride, sleep like a baby, then thank the stars for having blessed this planet at this time with a singular place such as Venice.

Have I made myself clear?

Having seen your other post regarding a drive from Cesky Krumlov to Venice, I don't know how to answer. In the absolute sense, if I thought I would never go back to Europe, I'd go to Venice. But if your itinerary on the other post is what you planned, I'd suggest Budapest rather than Venice because it's closer.

I would choose Budapest. I have made a short visit to both and loved Budapest! I thought it was more beautiful and interesting. However, so many rave about Venice, I am going back in May to see if I was wrong about it. I didn't actually plan to go back there, it was the only place I could get into with my flyer miles. If you haven't been to Rome and the Amalfi coast, that would be my first choice.

Thanks for the responses! Just too many choices and not enough time. We probably won't be going back to Europe for at least 5 years (except Germany where I would go annually for a few days to visit my elderly grandfather). My husband averages Europe about once every 5 to 10 years. That is my dilema in wanting to see it all, especially Venice. Any additional input greatly appreciated.

Tina, I would choose Venice because as somebody said, it is magic, beginning when you first catch sight of the city on approach by ferry. It is fun getting lost among the twisting winding streets and walkways, and the architecture is delightful. Souvenir shopping is amazing; there are many blown glass stores where you can pick up lovely mementoes, also jewellery shops and Venetian masks. A gondola ride is a must as well.

Budapest is more bohemian, less commercial. It's a large city with its sights more spread out. The parliament building is magnificent and the castle area a highlight as well. I didn't find it as charming as Venice though, where you find delights around every corner. If you have your heart set on Venice, I say go for it.
